Using Twitter Part 3 – Use Hashtags

Screen Shot 2014-05-05 at 12.53.14 PMHappy Cinco de Mayo!

I’m back with another Twitter tip and it’s a big one. Use hashtags

Twitter is a huge universe and if you’re not using hashatags you’re probably not reaching your targeted niche audience.

For example. Yesterday I put out a question on Twitter:

Where is the bathroom in the Millennium Falcon? I really want to know. #MayThe4thBeWithYou #StarWarsDay #bathrooms #lmageek

I used 4 hashtags (2 or 3 is ideal) but a bunch of Star Wars fans saw my tweet here and here and were able to interact and share.

So when you tweet about something use a relevant hashtag. #gardening, #DIY, #cincodemayo or if you mention a company use a hashtag. Social media is everywhere and just about every company searches daily for # mentions like #wholefoods and #craftsman and #squidoo.

I’m in our Squidoo Twitter account everyday and I want to see your lenses. So follow us and our hashtag #squidoo so I can find your lenses. I retweet the creative one.

So use hashtags every single time you Tweet.

PS – Also remember to make your tweets fun, personal and creative.

Thanks for the reminder, Bonnie. Too often, I forget the hashtags, in part because I tend to skip over any tweet that has more than one when I’m reading my feed. On the other hand, when i want to find what others are saying about a topic, I search for it using hashtags, so I know how important they are.

Thank you for emphasizing the use of 2 or 3 hashtags – that seems to be the advice given by several social media “gurus” It is also helpful to work the # into the sentence if you can. Twitter is one of my favorite social media platforms because it is crucial to be poignant but brief.

I plan to get up to speed on using hashtags while discovering where that MF bathroom is located. Inquiring minds need to know.

LOL…I know, that was really bugging me.

  • KitandCaboodle

Yep, I’m guilty of forgetting to use hashtags. I’ll do better, I promise!

Thanks for the tips. I try to use hashtags as much as possible, but I really have no idea how much visibility my tweets get. I think tweets visibility may also depend on the # of your Twitter followers (even if you use hashtags), but I might be wrong about that.

I am fairly new to using Twitter other than for following people and topics that interest me: now that I am trying to post regularly to Twitter I will begin to use #tags – I never realized before how important they were. Thanks for the info and education.
