Six Secrets for Getting Featured on Squidoo

Can you keep a secret by jinterwas on flickr via creative commons licenseCan you keep a secret? Here are six secrets that every lensmaster should know if they want their lenses to be featured on Squidoo or SquidooHQ.

1. Use big, bright, beautiful square pictures in the intro module on your lenses. Look at the Squidoo home page to see why square works best. Aim for 250×250 px or larger if you’d like to see your lens featured on the front page.

2. To get featured in one of our magazines, include at least one nice, large, rectangular picture in the body of your lens. Use the “text with big picture” module and a beautiful, wide shot on lenses you’ve assigned to a Squidoo magazine category, then keep your eye on the magazine’s front page.

3. Complete quests. Check your quest tab often for lensmaking challenges. Robin, our amazing questmaster, features lenses on SquidooHQ almost daily that she finds in her “completed quests” inbox. You never know when one of yours will be included on a monsterboard or chosen as Lens of the Day.

4. Get social. In addition to completing quests, participate in the community by reading and leaving comments on lenses, on SquidooHQ posts, and on the Squidoo forum. It’s a great way to get noticed and, who knows, might lead to one of your best lenses being chosen for a feature.

5. Use Squidoo’s Amazon and eBay modules. They’re designed to look great on your lenses, they’re easy to use, and you don’t have to sign up directly with Amazon or eBay to earn commissions (a definite plus for those of us who live in “sales tax states” where we can’t be affiliates). Lenses that use the tools provided by Squidoo really do stand out.

6. Write great content. This is the most important thing when it comes to making a stand-out lens. All the above are icing on the cake, but great content is the cake! Strive for greatness in every lens you publish. Write unique, useful content and keep it updated.

These secrets to making stand-out lenses really aren’t secret at all. In fact, the tips you read here at SquidooHQ are designed to help lensmasters make better lenses and we want every lensmaster on Squidoo to know these things. That’s why it’s a good idea to make SquidooHQ a daily destination. Besides, you never know when you might arrive to find one of your lenses being featured!

Susan52 didn't know she wanted to be a Giant Squid when she grew up, but here she is and she couldn't be happier about it! When she isn't doing one thing or another here at Squidoo, you'll probably find her spending time with her family or otherwise appreciating life one moment at a time.

Number six is a no-brainer, but somehow gets completely skipped over by so many people. As a noob squid, I didn’t even know about #2, so I’m gonna check out the magazines right away.

    Great post BTW.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/campingman campingman

All 6 are positive points and points that we should ALL strive for on a daily basis. Thanks for the reminder

Great tips. I’ll keep that in mind when writing future lenses.

    Great tips Susan… as always!

    Excellent information – thanks!

I didn’t know about a squidoo magazine until now!

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/darciefrench darciefrench

Thanks Susan, all of the above tips have worked for me in getting featured on the home page. Improving the photos and changing products on lenses are also great ways to update lenses.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/JJNW JJNW

Excellent advise, Susan! I want to get back into doing the quests. Some of my best lenses have come from completing quests. You just never know!

    Great tips!

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Philippinewanderer Philippinewanderer

I am relatively new to Squidoo and continue to make mistakes, but hopefully my lenses are becoming more concise as to the point I try to get across, thanks for the tips.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Steve_Kaye Steve_Kaye

Here’s one more tip: Click on Like when you visit a lens. The most successful people on Squidoo are also the most generous.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/irminia irminia

My blurb is just to corroborate what Steve_Kaye says about generosity!

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/kiwinana71 kiwinana71

Yes I agree with Steve_kaye one more tip.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/mojo_007 mojo_007

This is very true, but some of the really big squids do not always return the favor.

      • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/mismatch mismatch

you do something good because you are good — not because you expect to get immediately something back exactly in the same form. Doing good is like planting tree — it takes time but it will bring fruits one day. This is true as I experienced it — and I also only got wise later in life.

        • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/WonderMar WonderMar

This is totally true! I’m all about giving, and you’ve just stated the reason why. Giving and receiving is what makes the world go round. Good job!

          • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/aj2008 aj2008

As others have said – liking lenses is not about expecting someone to return the favor. Some of the most giving lensmasters on Squidoo are busy posting on Forums and Facebook or writing articles sharing what they know on various sites. It’s a question of what you would rather have – a like on a lens or some information that will may just help you do better on Squidoo?

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/karen-stephens karen-stephens

I think liking creates backlinks so is google friendly. Not sure though.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/graceonline Kathryn Grace

A “like” combined with a sincere, thoughtful comment is top-notch in my book, Steve. Good suggestion.

      • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/RenaissanceWoman2010 RenaissanceWoman2010

Yes indeed. Thoughtful comments are what makes Squidoo a community. Each comment is an opportunity to make someone’s day.

      • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/RenaissanceWoman2010 RenaissanceWoman2010

Yes indeed. Thoughtful comments are what makes Squidoo a community. Each comment is an opportunity to make someone’s day.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Ruthi Ruthi

I agree, Steve, and would also add that comments – quality, on topic comments – are also gems in my Squidoo shares.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/HuggsX3 HuggsX3

Yes. And liking another’s lens makes them happy! :)

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/laurapeterson215 laurapeterson215

      I love this! thanks!

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/KonaGirl KonaGirl

On the other hand, please do be sincere with your “likes” and “Squid Angel blessings”, not as a reciprocal gesture because someone liked or blessed your lens.

      • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Protasker Protasker

I agree with you. I only bless a lens that touches me and I think is a really good lens. I was happy when they took the 20 SquidLikes out of the equation. I don’t want likes or blessings if it’s just to full fill a quest for the day.

        • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Kalafina Kalafina

Completely agree with you on blessing a lens :)

      • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/seedplanter seedplanter

      Thanks

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/karen-stephens karen-stephens

I agree with Steve Kaye. Liking a lens is about generousity. I love to like lenses but blessing them though is only for the very special lenses.. Cheers! @–}–}–

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/stephen_edegree stephen_edegree

Really a good and easy help Steve. I myself have got most visits and promotions to one of my lens with this process.

      Thanks

    Where is the SquidLike button?

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Neoglitch Neoglitch

    As Corbett Barr would say:

    “Write Epic Sh*t!”

This is definitely the basis of everything we do on Squidoo and our own sites. Promotion is as important, of course. But without really, reaaaaally useful/engaging/entertaining content to share, all the promotion in the world will only make us look like spammers.

Thanks for these tips susan! :D

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Sue-DN Sue-DN

Thank you for this – I don’t know why but I thought Squidoo automatically changed the intro pic to 250 x 250 – that’s definitely something I’ll have to pay attention to.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Susan52 Susan52

The space available is 250 px wide. If you have a rectangular picture, though, it is not automatically cropped to a square.

I keep trying to get on the forum, but it won’t let me post anything even once I’ve logged in. Or rather, it will, but it isn’t actually published. The other tips are great, though! It’s pretty awesome to see one of your lenses on the front page!

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Chris-H Chris-H

These are great tips! Susan I have been cropping my intro photos to be exactly 250 x 250 px but you say “250 or larger.” Could you clarify as to whether larger is better?

Also, I noticed several months ago that all of my intro photos are being renamed to something nonsensical. I filled out a bug report but never received a response (other than an automated one).

I mention it here only because I know that this is important for SEO and would benefit everyone if this were fixed.

It wasn’t the case before, as intro photos I uploaded to older lenses are all named correctly. It’s only newer lenses that do it so something has changed in the mix. And it’s not just my lenses either. It seems to be a problem with any new lens.

    Take care! :)

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Susan52 Susan52

Squidoo will automatically scale the larger squares down to 250×250 so if you already have a bigger picture that’s a square, it’s fine to use that without reducing it on your own. As for the photo file names, you’ll have to talk to the tech guys about that – I have no idea!

I need to check out the magazines, too. I read about them somewhere and then they completely slipped my mind. Good tips. Thanks.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/jonart jonart

Rock solid good advice! Have a great day!

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/paperfacets paperfacets

The quests can be a mixed bag. There is opinion that quests can make an inferior lens. I have deleted lens I made that were a quest or challenge in the early days of Squidoo. On the other hand, a few lens that I have made, do to a Quest, have become favorites of mine and have been featured in the Mags and one for LOTD.

Quests are a good tool for HQ’s because most times lensmasters do their very best work for a Quest, because something extra is at stack. A prize, in the book Club, a purple star, being featured, you know Squidoo stuff. For HQs it would be hard to go cold into the world wide Squidoo, it is getting big, and find the exceptional. The exceptional is there, I know, but it is a needle in a haystack.

thank you, I use kigo which works great, but when the word ‘larger’ keeps cropping (no pun intended ;-) ) I wonder what is meant by large? 500 x 500? or 500 x 700 or insert number here.

Overall good tips, except that quests were much more fun when the magazines weren’t there yet and we were not pushed into uniformity. I’m an individual, I don’t like walking with the mass, never have and never will do.

Ssshhh! I can and will keep these six secrets a secret Robin. Thank you for sharing these secrets. I already incorporate about 90% of the six secrets. It is like eating an elephant. I have to also agree with Steve as I always try to “Pay It Forward” by “liking and leaving a comment” on every lens I visit, especially in return. Plus it helps me get to know everyone else in the Squidoo community and so far I have met some really fantastic Squidoos. (^_-)

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/BalanceByDesign BalanceByDesign

Good information, Susan. Especially for those just getting started. I would think #6 was a nobrainer like someone commented below but sadly enough, there are squids who post lenses with no content, just Amazon stuff. There certainly needs to be a balance.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/---Chazz —Chazz

Right on, Steve et al! I agree wholeheartedly!

I would also like to add that it would help if you use and credit images properly. I see so many lenses that use copyrighted images illegally but think it is okay because they include a link to where they found it. However, unless you have permission from the copyright owner, that is still plagiarism. I’ve seen this repeatedly on lenses by new through very giant squids.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/junaz11 junaz11

Excellent tips and advice! I totally agree with Steve_Kaye. It’s really important for all of us to remember that there are real people behind each of the lens. People that put hours of their time into creating and sharing their ideas and thoughts. Just liking and commenting on a lens you visit is a way showing a small random act of kindness. How many of us have received kind words about a lens we worked on, and just those few words brightened our day. I know I have…and just that little bit of kindness changed my whole outlook for the rest of my day. :-) For all those who have commented on my lens thank you so much!

These are great tips to get noticed. I find participating in the community, introducing new lenses gets them appreciated more. Also, using the modules you mentioned certainly adds to the look and impact of the lens. I would also add modules for people or visitors to participate in the lens, like Polls or Duel Debate. I love when people can share and participate in the lenses I create. Thanks for sharing.

Aside from the “likes,” leaving comments like “nice” or “good lens” to me is spammy. Be thoughtful with comments. Why are you leaving a comment? I know for me, I enjoy reading comments that reflect what someone thinks/feels about my lens. Go ahead, try it!

Surely you should only ‘like’ if you really do like, and the work is a reasonable standard? Or these days do we mean by ‘like’ some sort of rank currency. This isn’t the same as generosity.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Allison_Whitehead Allison_Whitehead

Great points. I do make a point of liking lenses and leaving comments, and I’ve also got better at adding big square pictures in the intros. Always helps to be reminded though!

I prefer a genuine comment where the reader actually sounds interested and isn’t just looking for a few points for saying something. I’m glad you included the suggested intro picture size – that was information I was looking for.

It is really great when you come onto a platform like this for the first time to find long term existing member that are willing to help out. I am already loving Squidoo, getting really drawn in to be honest and these tips will really help me. Although having a front page article isn’t the be all and end all, writing lenses that are of high enough quality to feature is. So thanks susan52 for all of these great tips! xxx
