How to Enrich Your Niche

I’m featuring one of our newest Squidoo Book Club lenses today to give you an idea that might help you enrich your personal lensmaking niche.

Take a look at  Wallace the Underdog by RenaissanceWoman2010. We know from previous lenses, that this lensmaster is actively involved with the San Luis Valley Animal Welfare Society, a no-kill animal shelter, and even though this lens is not specifically about the shelter, the book she reviews in the lens is a perfect match for all of her other animal shelter lenses.

If you’re working on a specific niche, think about other types of lenses that you could write to enhance your topic. Think book reviews, movie reviews, craft ideas, interesting destinations, topical debates or even recipes that will mesh well with your chosen niche topic.   Branching out in this way will give you a more eclectic and personalized mix of lenses centered around the same idea.

As your niche grows, link all of your similar lenses together to give your reader more of what they came for.

Have a look at the lens here:

Wallace the Underdog

1. Wallace the Underdog

Underdogs have always represented a great passion in my life. Whether canine or human, you will always find me cheering for—and losing my heart to—the underdog. In this case, the underdog was a pit bull named Wallace. Many people who kn…

I so appreciate this topic and your feature of my newest lens (Wallace the Underdog). When I create a lens, such as my San Luis Valley Animal Welfare Society lens, I have a mind map of how I will expand on that topic with new features. For example, I am working on two new lens series that will have the SLVAWS lens as their anchor. One will feature stories of especially inspirational dog rescues (heroic humans and dogs). The second series is a “you are there” look at a day in the life of various individuals who make it their mission to make a difference in the lives of needy animals. A huge thank you to everyone who supports our SLVAWS efforts and my lens crafting. I would love to see your presence and engagement with my new tribute to Wallace because his story is extraordinary. Thank you in advance!

I have done this with my Key West niche. I have a main lens (All About Key West) and 11 off shoots including one on Cuban sandwiches, several on area attractions, several on history, my childhood memories, infamous and famous inhabitants, tropical fruits, trees and plants, architecture, my cruise when we parasailed in Key West, etc. It’s fun to expand the niche in so many different ways.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/rms rms

That is awesome. Thanks so much for sharing your off shoot ideas here. They should really help get the creative juices flowing for anyone trying to expand their niche topics.

Hi Robin. Thanks for this wonderful tip. My niches are food and travel. I’ll work on relating them to each other and try some reviews too.

This article gives me a lot of food for thought. Thanks for writing it – I know I’ll put the information found here to good use.

I have started linking my lenses together and found things that peak my interest are where most of my lenses are … especially the garden and the kitchen :)

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Denmarkguy Denmarkguy

Love that lens– and how it ties into the core niche. I think this is a great way to do things; approach your niches like each one is basically a “web site,” with a main page (core information about the niche) and then a bunch of specifics that support it… interlinked almost “wikipedia style.” That’s what I’m planning to do with mine, as I go along.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/rms rms

Excellent way to think about it.

My lighthouse niche is growing all the time. I write a lens every time I visit a lighthouse or group of lighthouses and that falls in the travel category. I have branched out by featuring lighthouses products for various rooms of the house, lighthouse holiday decorations and books about lighthouses. I like your idea of a food lens for the niche…I’ll have to think about how to tie a lighthouse into a food lens :)

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/rms rms

      Love your lighthouse niche!

Hi Robin. I’m sorry this might be a little off topic. I have asked for help on the Forum and got no answers so far. I also tried to use the “Report a Bug” link, but there is no “submit” link(is it a bug too?).

There is a couple of problems when I am using IE 9 to browse squidoo pages.

    1. The social bar is floating on the page and blocking the content
    2. The new test “Ad Bar” at the bottom doesn’t show any ads but a big black bar.

I’m using Safari browser now so I can comment on HQ lenses. I couldn’t do it on my IE 9 browser.

Could you please have your team look into it?

I will have to investigate lens topics to support my niche. Thanks for the advice and featuring this neat example!

Thanks for great lens making tips

This is a good idea and helpful advice, I am restructuring the lenses in my account to showcase more personal stories on things I know well.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Ruthi Ruthi

I have never been a “niche” person and struggle with that when writing but have learned so much about focus from trying to do so here on Squidoo. This SLVAWS lens is a perfect example for me (thank you).

Thanks for the ideas on how to enrich our niche to give viewers a better experience.

What a fabulous example and an awesome, touching and heartwarming lens! Thanks so much for sharing. My first lens on Squidoo was an introduction to metal clay designed to serve as a gateway to a series of lenses on narrowly-focused metal clay-related topics, from how to reconstitute dried-out metal clay to how to dozens of ways to impress it with an infinite variety of texturing tools to how to set gemstones in metal clay before or after firing. To date 17 of my lenses are part of this metal clay niche…with many more to come! :)

I love the idea of crossing two niches (in a sense) to make a lens more eclectic. You got me thinking about what recipe to add to my book review. Hmmm

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/klaartje-loose klaartje-loose

Wow, what a great way to give tribute to the dog and the book, and at the same time build your own niche… I think I’m gonna write lenses about Cuban salsa music and trainingsvideos to linkt to my RitmoCubano- Why I love Cuban Salsa dancing lens. And I can write a lot more lenses about Portugal, not only in the travel section, but in the food and books section too! Great idea!

Super lens! (Oh, no pun intended.) Great tip, too, that should be easy to remember – “enrich your niche.” I appreciate the suggestions, Robin!

A book review is a great way to broaden a topic area. And I assume we all read on the subjects we are interested in already. Great idea!

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/rms rms

And the more we read about our favorite topic, the more we’ll learn about it and that means even more great ideas to write about. :)

I just learned a lot plus, you have just given me some ideas. Thank you for sharing. Now, I’ve got to go put those ideas into action!

  • Mohammed Omer

I’m nit that kinda of a guy who can write alot :(
I can preferred to be asked a question or asked for a request so I can focus my attention
but I guess not the way that squidoo operate..cause i receive zero attention to my lens and that made me disappointed and couldn’t find a way to expand
cause if there is no respond you won’t react

Great suggestions, Robin! I just got a few ideas. Thank you :)!

I have a niche and write most lens based on that area, however I am new and I enjoy the quests so now I am going to try to take the quests and at the same time some how tie them in with my niche subject.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/rms rms

When I first started out, I felt like that too. Someone told me my niche category was “patchwork quilt” …a little bit of everything. :) You’ll find yours eventually.

I was lucky enough to stumble into my core niche last month, children’s storyhours, and have been building from there. My core niche was entitled 100 children’s storyhours, so I have a way to go! It’s a great angle to explore, since squidoo gives you 9 spots on a lens to place related lenses.
I’ll also mention that when I’ve visited other lensmasters and WANTED to check them out, I’ve had a hard time finding a lens on their list that appealed to me and I have fairly eclectic interests. Books, movies, crafts, a personal story — maybe not great money earners but they would drive traffic.

I think personal interests and hobbies make the best niches because it is easier to write passionately and meaningfully on such topics.

thanks for the thoughts, I need to bring my lenses together. I’ll have to get working on this.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/FranTollett FranTollett

This helps make more sense to me about niche. A niche should be passionate and close to your heart, because that is what you “know” the best. AND the sharing is to enrich/educate the lives of everyone who visits and reads the lens and hopefully inspire them to break out into the world and make a difference :-) Sometimes it takes me a while but I think I may have “got it” :-D

Robin, I think it is great you cheer for the underdog.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/SGRPSYD SGRPSYD

My first thought was that “enrich niche” in this topic was very catchy, so using impactful words is essential to attract readers. I would also think that building lenses around a topic expanding on the what, where, how, when , why and who approach might be a good place to start. But, I’m still a newbie at this so I should listen first before I give advice. Yet, its fun sharing!
