How to Build a Quality Gift Guide Lens

Screen Shot 2013-03-12 at 3.03.42 PMGood news! The number of online shoppers continues to increase daily and with that increase comes the need for quality, useful, and personally-reviewed product information. How exciting that Squidoo provides the means for us to create lenses offering just that!

The goal of a gift guide lens should be to create a vibrant, helpful page that adds value to the shopping experience. There’s nothing like a personal recommendation to keep a shopper’s attention. Do you have to own every product that you review? Of course not. What you do have to do is conduct enough research so that your recommendations become personal recommendations based on the knowledge that you gain through that research. Of course when you have hands-on time with a product and use that experience as the basis of your recommendation, and especially if you document that hands-on time with your own photos, then so much the better.

Building trust with your readers is a responsibility that should not be taken lightly. Everything that you include on a lens should be hand-picked by you to add value to the lens and to enhance the shopping experience for the reader/customer. Put yourself in the shoes of the shopper when you create a gift guide lens and include answers to every question that person might have about the product. A phrase I like to keep in mind is Be the FAQ. If your lens is missing pertinent information, then you haven’t done your job and likely the shopper will go elsewhere.

So before you publish a gift guide or product review, read it again with fresh eyes (it’s good to put it away for an hour or a day then come back to it) to see if any unanswered questions remain. If so, make those additions before you hit the “publish” button.

Your original content that includes interesting, helpful information based on good research, plus a few nice photos are all you need to turn a simple gift guide lens into a complete, amazing shopping guide. That should be your goal.

Susan52 didn't know she wanted to be a Giant Squid when she grew up, but here she is and she couldn't be happier about it! When she isn't doing one thing or another here at Squidoo, you'll probably find her spending time with her family or otherwise appreciating life one moment at a time.

    Building trust is indeed important.

    Hope I haven’t failed.

Spot on…value first then maybe profit later. Something that always stuck with me is that your online earnings are a byproduct of how helpful you can be to others

I personally try to live by the golden rule – treat my readers as I would like to be treated – write copy that I would enjoy reading elsewhere.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/TheGardenGuys TheGardenGuys

Hmmmm, I’m not sure that always works though. You need to treat your readers how THEY would like to be treated (not you). And that’s all about knowing the market your in.

Good advice. Gift guide lenses are much more helpful when the author can attest to actually owning the product! People want to know about quality, durability, etc. and not read a page that could have been pulled straight from Amazon.

Thank you for writing this helpful guide for writing better gift guides.

Yeah you have to be very careful not to just slap a list of specifications up. That’s duplicate content which is not going to get you very far with google…. even if it does slip through the Squidoo filter.

Well I can say this about Susan52 she read my first lens and liked it, so I in turn looked her up and read one of hers. I then liked it in return. I did not do this without reading it. It was on Amazon kindles. I can tell you this she really knows a lot about Amazons product line of kindles so if your looking for one just look her up and read her lenses about them. They are well done and there is tons of good information to help you make a good decisions about purchasing one.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Titia Titia

I honestly must say when I’m shopping online I sometimes read reviews by other people just for fun, but they won’t have any effect on my decission whether to buy or not to buy. When I’m in a real store I really hate it when a salesman/woman comes over and try to talk me into buying a particular item. When I visit a lens, I look at the products, sometimes I like them, sometimes I don’t, but I never read the descriptions the lensmaster has written for the products.

I’m not a good saleswoman I think LOL

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/scarlettohairy scarlettohairy

I agree, Titia. Like Tina Fey wrote in her book Bossy Pants about her dad: “He cannot be marketed to.” Me neither. I try to write though to make a product seem worth buying, but it’s hard sometimes with my practical mentality.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/patgoltz patgoltz

I’m like that, too. But I don’t mind at all reading personal experiences in sales lenses. That’s different from marketing hype.

I tend not even to SEE most ads on the internet. At times I think Squidoo is a little too commercial.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/XxSadieLadyxX XxSadieLadyxX

LOL I do the same thing

    Thank you Susan…

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/PaulOnBooks PaulOnBooks

You could add “look across your lenses”. Don’t do dozens of lenses that review pretty much the same items and say on each that “this is the best” – readers aren’t stupid and they know when they’re being fed bs.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Cercis Cercis

I do agree Paul personal recommendations should be used sparingly and well.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/emmajo emmajo

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/RenaissanceWoman2010 RenaissanceWoman2010

With so many people reviewing the same products, it’s always critical to ask yourself: What’s the value I add? What’s that extra touch that makes my review _the_ go to review?

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/rattie rattie

      Absolutely correct.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Tipi Tipi

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/greenspirit greenspirit

“Everything that you include on a lens should be hand-picked by you to add value to the lens and to enhance the shopping experience for the reader/customer’” …

So how does the squidoo inserted ad for Laura Ashley Online , and ‘get a sim card’ fit into my purple star, LOTD, 3 years old lens on how to choose the right poppy seeds, and the best way to grow them?

These ads appear immediately after the introduction.

True this lens is not a ‘gift lens’ whatever that is. It is a lens that sells specific chosen things, and written by an expert. (that’s me).

This is a specialist topic of mine, not plucked to make a quick buck. I get queries from around the world about growing poppies from people who read this lens. It’s a lens that has been meticulously written to give people seeking poppy seeds to buy and sow, accurate advice, value, and the benefit of many years of experience.

What you are saying in this post is really misleading if completely arbitary ads get added to lenses after they are completed.(and no I haven’t searched for either these added products on my computer)

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/santas-lil-elfer santas-lil-elfer

      this is a valid point.

      • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/KonaGirl KonaGirl

        Spot on.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/getmoreinfo getmoreinfo

Yes I like to handpick items I am highlighting on a lens too. It is interesting what can be found on Amazon with a little digging.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/missamyliz missamyliz

Ads like that are usually specific to your IP. Tracking software records everything you type and especially search for to tailor ads to your needs. Which of course, makes you more likely to buy. I would guess someone in your house has been looking up SIM cards and home redecorating ideas. (I could be wrong, but that’s what I’ve noticed over time.)

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/TheTravelGal TheTravelGal

      So true

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/patgoltz patgoltz

I agree. And at times, the products can be something I would NEVER endorse, buy, or recommend to anyone. They may even be contrary to my values.

I understand the need for ads. But Google does allow people to narrow ad choices. I doubt if Squidoo has the resources to make sure the Google ads are appropriate for a particular lens. Let the squids who write the lenses decide that.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/LTykarski093 LTykarski093

    thanks for the tips

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/JeffGilbert JeffGilbert

I don’t think using “the best of” generally is a good idea, more like, the best of this group of items that you’re speaking about now, so you can highlight a couple.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/rauspitz rauspitz

I work in e-commerce and I know how incredibly important trust is. I also work very hard at creating content on my e-commerce sites that speaks to the visitor and gives them information they can actually use. Those concepts are no different with Squidoo or your own personal blog. People need to know they can depend on and believe in what you are saying. All very good points.

Heh. Since most of my lenses are stories and things I love to visit about, I’m not selling *anything* except for stuff to support my stories. Since I don’t like being *sold to*, I try to not *sell* anything from my lenses. It works for me. :-)

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/lestroischenes lestroischenes

Sometimes a really good shopping guide is great – when you need something that you don’t know about. When I first bought a laptop I didn’t know which questions I had to ask myself! I didn’t know that I had to ask myself how long I wanted the battery to last etc Why is one cheap and another 4x the price? What do I want it to do, (what can it do??) and what can I afford to pay for it to do. There are often downsides and traps to these products. I’ll certainly re-read one of the good Squidoo lenses on the Kindle et al before I finally take the plunge. I love it when somebody flags up all this information.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/bloomingrose bloomingrose

Sometimes I need to find out information, honestly sometimes I just need to look at the products that are there. For example, if I was buying an Easter hat for my niece I wouldn’t need to know the history of Easter bonnets, although it might be fun. But if I was buying a Kindle or a vacuum cleaner, I would want a more thorough review because it is more expensive and the purchase is based on function not what it looks like.

I really believe that you need to be offering people some value in what you have written about in the first place. Something that you sell should be seen to lend credence to what you have written about. That, to me, is paramount.

Good thoughts, some very basic, but things that we should all consider.

There are a lot of SPAM lenses on Squidoo. One lensmaster in particular, has pages and pages of nothing but links and NO content at all!!!! His lenses are high ranking and I was told NOT spam, but they are! Seems like Squidoo is sending mixed messages. Also, the constant “Quests” to make news lenses for points and trophies doesn’t help, people just put anything on a page.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/kerryv kerryv

Well, I agree with you that there shouldn’t be lenses that consist only as links. However as a fairly new squid I feel that the quests keep me focused and help me to learn more about Squidoo and all of it’s possibilities.

To enhence your buying experience read the free ebook created by a Google personality, he has the right advice for both buyers and sellers. I created a lens about it:

It is my belief that, as Susan said, that building the trust of our readers is paramount. Who will benefit from shoddy lenses? We won’t if we break trust, that’s for sure.

People aren’t stupid. They know when we haven’t done “due diligence.” If we don’t have first-hand experience, at least we can do enough research to know what we write about. Never, ever, insult another person’s intelligence.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/ChefWilliam ChefWilliam

This will be a new area for me and would need to be something that I use personally. As a chef, I do know a few things about kitchen knives, and cooking equipment and could recommend what I use in my kitchen. That will be added to my list of projects for the near future.

I am refreshed after reading Michey’s lens about ZMOT, that online marketing will increase and become more the norm. There are no better opportunities to do research, compare prices, and look for products to fit your needs than internet “window” shopping. Also, the unique creativity that can be found on the web, at Zazzle stores and other creative hot spots offer gifts and treasures galore, all from your home, despite the weather or gas prices. Squidoo could become the first go-to place for info, piquing folks’ interest in a product, and convincing them that the convenience of online shopping is the way to go and Squidoo is the personal guide for the “window” shopping ~ or “chrome” shopping, as the case may be. The internet is the go-to place to shop and since the merchandise comes to you, it’s a win-win! The new themes that Squidoo offer are terrific, setting the mood for a relaxing experience. And Mother’s Day is coming! B : )

My experience has been that when building product review sites, whether for Amazon or other affiliate programs or companies, you need to plan and build the page(s) or website with the customer in mind.

Your visitor is asking “What’s in it for me?” Build the page, or lens, as if you are the customer and try to answer all of the questions that you or your visitor might ask about the product(s).

Thanks, Susan. Great tip to re-organise my gift lens from last year. So many things to learn. I appreciate your taking time to inform us all this very important ideas.

Personal is good, but there’s a limit to what a person can come up with. That said, building content around other people’s experience is valuable up to a certain extent. If the personality doesn’t shine, well, the next best content is just a click away.

I hope my “Macaroni English” will never affects my lenses, because being Italian never helps me in writing great and grammar proof lenses. I hope you will appreciate them anyway, as they are all built from my heart and passions :)

  • http://bameslive.com/ Bames Kaur Pabla

Thanks for the tips… I have not written lenses in a while because I have become rather confused at why there are so many lenses that seem to contain only links and nothing else yet are ranked so high while others with great and original content are taken down. :(

Yet another type of lens I don’t think about making but probably should… I tend to find them to be just a big sales pitch (which they are) and somewhat of a turn off, even if I am looking for a gift for someone

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/freethemes4all freethemes4all

What is sad is more and more shopping websites design and work for search engines not for users… sure there is a good websites but most in my opinion view don’t care about users view but care about search engines and how they rank to!

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/20051979 20051979

    nice

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/TheLittleCardShop TheLittleCardShop

Another thing what customers thinkwhen looking at a product is “why is this product good for me, or why should I buy it?” We have to tell them exactly why you recommend this product, not only hand picked them because you like it but why it is good. Another convincing thing is when you also have a few cons about your product. Not every product is 100% perfect.
    Great advice from everyone :)

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/juliavm juliavm

I always read reviews before buying anything, especially those that look like they were written by users. It pretty much helps me decide whether I’d like to spend money on something I haven’t seen and touched yet.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/alexmasters alexmasters

Thanks for a great content rich lens. I must admit, I have come across lenses with too many links that it appears the lens was solely created as a platform for links!

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/topbuilderlist topbuilderlist

This is a great way for us to help sellers and buyers to understand thoroughly the stuffs before buying. A good guide for buyers in checking people’s comments before having a final decision.
