Create Better Lenses: Delight your Reader

Recently, I found myself reading eBay’s “Best Practices” tips for sellers when I was struck by the wisdom and simplicity of this line:

“Delight your buyer.”

I think this is great advice and it immediately made me think of Squidoo’s best lenses and how they’re able to inform, entertain and bring people together. In short, they delight.

Great lensmasters know this – that’s why they take the time to create lenses designed and written for readers, not robots. A great lens is something to be proud of and your extra effort will be appreciated and valued by your audience. With all that in mind, today I say to lensmasters:

“Delight your reader.”

Here’s 5 simple ideas to get you started:

1. Make them laugh

Humor is always a reliable way to delight your reader.  Letting your writing be funny or adding a joke or two can lighten the mood of your lens no matter what the subject. Even serious lenses can benefit from a casual, lighthearted tone if it’s used well.  If you’re starting with a funny topic, delight will be even easier!

Showing your sense of humor helps to humanize your writing and connect you with your reader and that’s what making a lens is all about. Whether you write puns, tell a satirical story or add an amusing video, getting your reader to laugh is always delightful.

2. Be unique

Have you ever been reunited with a long lost treasure or stumbled upon a long out of print book you’ve always hoped to find? A well written, original and truly unique lens can offer a similar kind of delight for your readers.  When you’re creating lenses, try to target a specific audience and give them a lens that’s concise, accurate and written with their needs in mind.

Don’t hesitate to write a lens because you think the topic has a small audience – when you offer great content and keep it up to date, visitors old and new are sure to be delighted by your uniqueness and before long you may find yourself with more visitors than you could have ever imagined.

3. Start with a delightful topic

Choose a topic that’s inherently delightful is an easy way to make a great lens and have some fun while you’re at it. As the preponderance of cat videos on the Internet proves, many, many people go online specifically hoping to be delighted!

Next time you’re in a creative slump or fighting a case of lensmaster’s block, why not try crowd-pleasing lens that’s fun, entertaining and unique?

Take some of the pressure off yourself and have fun researching, writing and curating delightful content. Leave room for expansion and you’ll always have something to work on when you need a creative boost. Now doesn’t that sound delightful?

4. Reach out to your readers

Readers love to see an active, recently updated lens where they can interact with the author. If you have many lenses, it can seem daunting or even downright impossible to respond to every comment that you get. Even if you aren’t able to reply to every comment you receive, it’s always a good idea to answer any questions left in your guestbook. Not only will you connect with the asker, you’ll be sending a signal to future visitors that you’re a real person who cares about their content and the people who enjoy it.

When the opportunity to delight presents itself, go for it – you’ll put a smile on someone else’s face and your own!

5. Create a lens for people like you

It’s not always so easy to find something to write about. Don’t be discouraged if another website, book or even lens covers a topic that you wanted to write about. With so many choices online, many readers are looking for content creators they can relate to. (Did you know that we even tend to make friends with people similar to us?)

Create your lens and try to let it reflect your unique viewpoint. Make it your own by sharing your experiences, thoughts and ideas alongside high quality, original, unique content. Being yourself will bring like-minded readers who’re sure to be delighted by your lens.

Yep, all of that and a bit of Fairy Dust will do the trick.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/northerntrials northerntrials

No Fairy dust makes you fly… I think it is Pixie dust that makes you laugh… or was that sneeze… I forgot… But Fairy Dust makes you fly… I’m sure.. I think.

      • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/CathyFrias CathyFrias

I believe you are right it is the Pixie dust. The Pixie dust makes them sneeze and then laugh uncontrollably! Tinkerbell has the fairy dust and flies off to never never land.

I think the Disney version of Peter Pan said ” all you need is faith and trust and oh yeah a little bit of pixie dust” I remember i had a kids album that said that before they started singing, was one of my favorites. Fairy is not same as pixie and tinkerbell is a pixie i believe

Liken your writing to slipping into your favorite pair of shoes, and (I think) the end result will be a style that shines with the authenticity of YOU. Yes? Are you a tennis shoe kind of person with a loose, comfortable, approachable style, or are you a pair of high heels, sleek and polished? If the shoe fits, your readers will sense it and be comfortable as well. That’s my take. Thanks for reinforcing it as I work at finding my footing here on Squidoo!

Great advice – it’s good to write for the pleasure of yourself and others, sometimes, instead of always for the money to be made!

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Lovelifelaughter Lovelifelaughter

I do hope that this would apply to all my lenses. I try to make my lenses something I would want to read if I were a visitor, and always use unique content. So I heartily agree with this. I find it a delight to respond to people who visit my lens, and like it when people respond to my visits too. One thing I wish is that we were automatically advised when someone responds to us when we visit their lens, as I don’t always go back to checkout if I’ve been answered. But I am getting to know some really nice people here, and fding a sense of community.

Yes, humor and delight. Definitely. I always get a thrill when I’ve tucked in a little humorous aside and someone “gets” it — because it means I’ve touched them and because it means that they’ve read far enough in the lens to actually see it. This means they’re reading the lens and that my words are not going into a black hole. Now that is exciting.

Creating a lens which helps your readers or your visitor is what you require to rank better on SERP. Now making you reader laugh can simply be called as ART. Since its not an easy task and not all can do it.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/rayncathy rayncathy

I agree that you need to write in this style. You need to get your readers to relate to you. If you do then they are more likely to take whatever action you are asking them to do.
If it’s to buy something or go to something else or even to donate to a charity, then if they relate and feel that you can be trusted they are more likely to take that action than if you just write a “sales pitch”

I try to keep a good balance of storytelling and sales lenses, which is not always an easy task. I was Under the impression that My lens will be cycled in random throughout the day (like facebook posting random friends suggestions or pages to like)

By then after I published My lens I found it has to be searched to rise up.. which is impractical and hard for NEW people like me..If I had a good idea HOW to promote a site or page I would have so many sites under my disposal..

I would really suggest a help for the search engine to rather than spotlight ONE site each day which might be already have it’s high rand..bu to place new lenses on the dashboards of users to promote those unfortunate ones like me.. how might not get a hit in search for a very long time

cause My first lens is not about a topic but to offer services..which is highly unlikely to be searched through the site

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/igorGriffiths igorGriffiths

Well hello Tom, what a great list of common sense :)

You are so right to point out that with so many people online creating content the only unique item left is our own personality. Like and dislike can be completely irrational, there are people who you both consciously and unconsciously fail to connect with for reasons that you cannot quite explain to others.

With this in mind you have just got to accept that not everyone will love all of your lenses but if you write to delight then the balance will most likely as you point out be towards the positive.

I like #3: Aim at being unique. That translates in my head as “Don’t be boring”. Because the lenses you create are for ordinary people like you (#5). Most people can lose interest almost instantaneously. So I don’t know that I’m so much being “unique” as I’m just trying to keep the lens visitor’s attention for about 5 minutes!!! Hopefully, I’ve delighted the reader enough for them to share my lens with others and maybe buy something! :) <3

Great tips. The toughest of all the five is “Be Unique”. With so many lensmasters writing the same thing, it is not easy to be unique. But readers can differentiate what is unique and great content.

Thank you, Tom. This is one of my problem. Now, that I started squidoo I’m beginning to get the scary feeling that people will not like me anymore and that I will not be able to come up with their expectations. I think I need to find the ‘delight’ myself to be able to create more topics.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/RenaissanceWoman2010 RenaissanceWoman2010

Delight… the act of bringing light into another person’s day (or moment). Delight… the art of enlightenment. Delight… a synonym for lens wizardry at its best. Delight… the magic that happens every day on Squidoo. Great theme, Tom!

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/teriann teriann

I believe these are right on topic for creating what not only delights the reader but also what would delight the writer as well. How boring it would be to produce if the writer were not interested in the topic either. I have to admit all I can picture in my head now is Donald O’Connor’s ‘Singing In The Rain’ routine ‘Make em’ laugh’. He knew how to delight his audience and looked like he was enjoying it, too.

Great tips for creating better lenses from which to delight our readers, Tom. Thank you!
What I have discovered of late is that I am becoming more at ease writing about topics I knew little about, by getting lost in the discoveries made along my research journey. Further, I am able to transfer that excitement of discovery into my page content; thus, delighting my readers. Now, that is delightful!

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/keithppc keithppc

I agree, (although I admit that some of my lenses aren’t that good either). Lenses should be written for the readers. Some of the better lenses I will read from top to bottom, but many of the others are just one big advert! The lenses I have written because I’m passionate about the subject, have gained a lot more readers. I will review my lenses and try harder to write interesting content.

I’ve been working on a lens for about a month. When I published it, it ended up getting locked! Reason? It seems it is “copied” content! But I worked on with no ones help!
