3 Tips That Will Open Doors

Screen Shot 2014-03-04 at 1.45.43 PM

You have a great idea or a project that you’re passionate about like crafts or a hobby or a trip to Paris…so now what? You want your lens to get noticed, shared and like. Heck, going viral would be great too. But how to you get there?

Here are 3 quick things that every lens should have.

1) Great photos. This doesn’t mean canned stock photos. It means photos that people (real humans) will connect with and share. Your cell phone is good enough to take these photos.

2) A good story. People connect with people. Make people laugh, cry, think and yep…share. Why is your lens good enough to share?

3) YOU. I can’t tell you how many times I see lenses that are artificial or impersonal. Put your personality into everything you write.

Give people a delightful surprise when they walk through your door and they’ll tell their neighbors about how awesome you are.

Bonnie I whole heartedly agree, most all my lenses are personal, but they don’t garner the hits….so WHAT am I doing wrong?? I spend more time freshening up my lenses that I have no time to make new ones…and then for a scraper to steal a lens plus my Amazon ads? :-(

The search engine game has changed a lot this past year for the entire web. The best way to get traffic is to write content that people want to share and spread. Success won’t happen overnight but if you continue to write about the things you care about people will take notice. The key is to keep writing, sharing and spreading the word.

Definitely agree with all of those – most people are able to take their own photos these days because cameras are on so many mobile devices now. I prefer to see lenses that use personal photos and I’m much more likely to share those on various social media sites too.

Thanks for this heads up on Squidoo”s style. Every few months I get furious at Google for their Squidoo slap and the slap on my lenses. For some reason, other sites with my keyword are now ahead of me. They were not before. Some factors may be at work: They are older than my lenses, they are .com sites, they each have a link from one of my lenses. Another rant put in print. I will keep your three rules in mind.

I think this is right on. The internet is awash in template style content. The people I know on Squidoo are colorful and energetic. Their best lenses brim with that. I’m as guilty as anyone of trying to do things “the right way” and ending up with something without a spark, undistinguished. Keep up the coaching, Bonnie. This is how we’ll all get better.

Gee, maybe I missed something, but that failing is not one which I associate with the lenses of yours that I have read… Blind luck, maybe? (Joke!) No, seriously; if I were you I’d find something else to worry about ~ you’ve conquered that one!
