We’re Retiring the iTunes & YouTube Plexo Modules

Screen Shot 2014-06-24 at 4.58.29 PMToday we’re retiring the iTunes Module and the YouTube Plexo Module. After careful consideration and research we’ve found that other modules are better suited for sharing music and videos. Very few users are currently using these modules.

Instead use the Amazon Module to share songs. You can share digital songs in the Amazon Module like this. Use the Video Module for YouTube videos.

There’s nothing you need to do. The modules will simply be removed from your lenses.

Makes perfectly good sense to me to remove these modules!

    • ZodiacImmortal

NO IT DOESN”T!!! Now everyone’s playlists (the themesd ones are gone) not to mention have lost writing etc. It could have been announes at least 3 months ahead of time so we could make note of the songs we had posts (not to mention youtube videos so we can find the same ones for the stupid new vid mod that you can even add the video via the URL…) no Yu have to add then watch to see if it;s a proper video.

  • britflorida

    Fine by me!

  • MSchindel

Good idea! Thanks for letting us know. :)

  • AmineBomBom

thanks i noticed days ago that itunes module is missing this explains what was the last upgrade was about and what it changed and what are the future goals for you, and for us, anyway thanks for the update

  • Christene

Ouch. I used them both quite a bit.

    • charlino

Me, too. My Cat Fight lens had a battle royal where people could vote up clips of Dynasty Alexis and Crystal catfights. This sort of undermines the aspect of encouraging viewer participation, but understandable to a degree.

  • kiwinana71

Thanks for keeping us up to date. I have been using Amazon all the time for digital songs, works fine.

  • CashInTheHand

    Good to know, thanks.

  • LoreleiCohen

All my videos appear to be live so I guess I don’t use those modules. Thank you for the heads up.

  • sandyswriter-review

Now I need to go through my lenses to see if I need to add something.

  • aswahayah

    Good to know, thanks.

  • flinnie

    Thanks for the head up.

  • Merrci

Sounds like a good plan. Thanks!

Remove the modules fine, but is there any way I can get my writing back? I lost an entire lens because I featured a bunch of songs on the iTunes module (the Amazon module has a limit to how many you can use so it makes no sense to use that one). Now I’ve lost all of the writing I did on that lens because the writing was within the iTunes modules, so it is an empty lens through no fault of my own. Were we warned about this so we could transfer our content onto different modules?

    • marsha32

From what I read there was no warning….just like no warning about the lenses under the rank of 175,000 going to WIP the same day it was announced.
That also would have been nice to have a month’s notice or so to work on them and not end up with tons in the red all at once.

    • fanfreluche

Marigold, it will be time consiming but try and look and google cache for the lenses that were affected, you are going to be able to copied your lost content from there, but do this asap because the cache won’t be there that long

Now I can see why so many people are leaving Squidoo.. I jsut wish IU knew where they were moving their stuff to. Not to mention It would be nice if they’d at aleast let Us vote on if we wanat to keep it or not. (or at least let those of us who pref. a certain mod or not keep it. Even if we have to be charged a dollar a year or something. Certain things are good for certain types of lenses. I don’t want mine ,looking like everyone4 elses like Hugdug does with only 3 other mod options to use. Bunch of F-n nazi’s that run this site now.. really my hands are shaking with how much work I have to do now.. I think now EVERY one of my lenses is ruined It’s bead enough youtube is supposedly not going to cater to indepententas if that’s true but really you can’t wait a bit to find out if really true… I doubt youtube & vimeo have the same videos..

  • marsha32

oh that is sad! On some of my lenses I may be able to replace the songs with songs through amazon, but probably I’m already at the limit of amazon links.
At least it gives me yet another reason to check in on yet more lenses. I was eventually getting to my music ones. I am clueless if I used the youtube plexo, but don’t really think so since I don’t recall hearing about it.

  • lestroischenes

Totally wrecked my Name Song lens. Will have to think twice about using modules on Squidoo as they seem to come and go with rapidity. Will unpublish I suppose – or start again??.

  • relache

You know, this delete without any notice strikes me as one of the extreme ignorant customer service decisions that Seth Godin is always discussing as an example of businesses who blatantly do things to alienate their customers. I have always been really wary of people who presumed to make decisions about what they think may or may not be important to me.

Bonnie, I don’t often speak like this out in public conversation, but you and the rest of the Squidoo team need to really make sure you do not start a wave of dissatisfaction and anger in your core users like HubPages did when they decided that unannounced changes were going to be a regular occurrence. The admin and mods have really messed things up there as far as morale goes, and quite frankly, as much as Squidoo just seems to be copying HubPages these days (which is amazingly sad), I strongly suggest that Squidoo not follow their example of pissing off their long-term, core users

    • EMangl

do you really expect common sense from the squidoo team? they are lost in their own little world acting against users

  • aswahayah

Thanks for providing such a nice detail information.

  • Denmarkguy

Glad to see it. I always found it annoying to suddenly have a lens start “auto playing” music on top of the music I was already listening to…

  • bloomingrose

Okay by me – never used them and it seems this way we can keep it simpler.

  • greatkhan24

Hmm, this is either a good idea or bad idea.
In the end, I want to see who benefits from this decision.

This is the sort of action that gets lensmasters very discouraged. One day you are encouraged to do one thing, and you try to build a masterpiece using as many as possible of the modules provided, and then POOF! One day things change without warning and some of your lenses my go red because of modules Squidoo takes away. The only module I keep track of with a lens label is the countdown that I know needs updating every year. But who keeps track of which lenses have plexos or other modules you don’t expect to have to go in and change all at once because they might disappear? Maybe we need to start labeling all lenses with maps, twitter, voting, etc., just in case.
