Product Review Lens Policy

Screen Shot 2013-11-17 at 4.12.51 PMBack in September we introduced the new product review format and we’ve been completely delighted by the lenses you’re creating. Lenses like this, this and this.

However from time to time we’re seeing lenses that are a bit more commercial or on topics that we consider to be SquidDon’ts so we decided to write up a policy for the product review lens format to get everyone on the same page.

It’s pretty straightforward and offers solid tips on success.

You can read the new policy here:

This is also a great lens for newbies who are starting their first review lens. So do take a gander and then try your own review. Here is the link to create a Product Review lens:

Some excellent examples I need to get cracking!

Thanks for this great lens! It makes perfect sense!

  • BarbaraCasey

I like that it’s about the story… and that our reviews are “real” ones now.

    • bdkz

      Thanks Barbara!

There’s only one part of the policy I don’t understand; we were told at one time to put the sentence in asking for the sale, i.e.; “Click on the orange Buy Now button to purchase this product from Amazon.” Now we’re told not to use it and that’s really confusing. So now I’m going back over all my product reviews and deleting and revamping, just to comply. See you in a couple weeks!

    • bdkz

This is a new policy. After reviewing a bunch of lenses we’re seeing this pop up a lot and we just decided that it may become cookie cutter if everyone is doing it.

      • Ruthi aka abitosunshine

Yes, I have been using some form of Buy Now phrase on my lenses too, as I’d once read it was ok to do so, I have a bunch of lens edits to do! But I do understand the new ruling on the matter.

One thing I wish for the new product review format is more targeted lenses added at the end. The ones now seem often pretty random.

Will current reviews of rated-R merchandise such as movies have to be removed? I’ve read some amazing reviews of rated R, rated PG-13, and rated PG movies which, according to the old Squidoo guideline of everything not appropriate for kindergarteners being rated R, all equate to rated R on Squidoo. I’ve also read a bunch of great reviews of books which are written for adults and definitely include swearing (in the books, not the reviews!) or sexual themes which are also considered rated R on Squidoo. Am I correct in thinking the new Squidont means all of those reviews have to go?

    • bdkz

R-rated movies are fine. We’re talking about R and X-rated products.

      • Kylyssa

This may sound stupid but could you define what those are? If rated R movies and books (and possibly music) including adult language or themes can be reviewed what sort of products are rated R if rated R movies aren’t rated R? Do you just mean stuff with nudity in the product image and “adult” toys?

  • manlalakbay

I’m not aware of this. I guess this is the reason why I keep seeing new format of product lenses. I have to get familiarized with it so I could create my own product lenses. Thanks for this new policy! :)

Thank you Bonnie for including my H2O Mop review, It’s very reassuring to know that I’m on the right track!

  • d-artist

Interestingly enough I felt the same when reading some of the reviews …commercial, selling without a personal touch, and very short lenses…JMO!

  • DaveStone13

Looks fine to me. Thanks, Bonnie.

  • aredey

    Thanks for this great lens!

  • maykobaya0

    Thanks for the update.

Once again don’t take me bad, but what do you plan for Squidoo to get traffic? Policies over and over again aren’t going to get us in Google’s good graces again.

Also is Squidoo bound to become now a movie and book review site only, just like, previously in the year it had become a mom’s oriented site?

Unless on a particular-highly-popular-under-exploited product, these product review lenses don’t get any kind of traffic, maybe it’s time to simply review that part of the site instead of adding policies. What’s the point building such lenses if they don’t get traffic at all? Product reviews are pretty well done on personal sites, they’ve always been popular and still are. Squidoo will never overrank them in search engines. And still what’s the point building thousands of lense on the very same book or movie?

Useless and the fastest way to become a cached site in Google’s database…

What I find funny about it all, is that 6 months from now Squidoo is going to declare all these review lenses we’re we’re currently encouraged to make, a SquidDon’t, and lock them all.

  • bobsnowzell45

    thanks for that

  • gloria freeman

I am still working on making the lenses I need to remain a giant squid. Thanks for the head up, Bonnie.

  • SoundFinance

When you talk about the buy now button I’m a bit confused as I thought the button appeared when you put the product in and did a review on it…or are you referring to an additional ‘buy now’ button?
Also I did a book review and while there was an image on Amazon it did not appear on the lens. I did send a bug report but I still see it’s a problem. Thanks.

    • bdkz

The button is on the lens. We’re just saying in most cases there’s no need to say “click the orange button to buy” at the bottom of the lens.

  • janey126

    looking good. thank you.
