It’s sweet, a fantastic, creative improvement. Just a note, though — for me at least, the category tabs across the top of the activity pages don’t work. Brings up an error message with a big green squid.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/bdkz bdkz

Thanks Dave! I just reported that bug.

      • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/TopTenGamer TopTenGamer

Bonnie, I mentioned this on the forum. It’s the home page menu links. The URL is incorrect for all of them. Halloween is going to happyhalloween.www.squidoo.com instead of the subdomain happyhalloween.squidoo.com

        • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/bdkz bdkz

Thanks! We are fixing this now.

          • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/prosperity66 prosperity66

Works pretty well on my dash…

          • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/DaveStone13 DaveStone13

            Yep, it’s fixed now.

  • ChocolateLily

Hey Bonnie! The new look is nice. I like how the text is bigger. I do have a couple of questions though.
    - Are usernames going to be used anymore or are we to be known by our real names? (ref. profile pages)
    - How do you input which facebook page you want to link to? I had mine linked to a page I manage but it got switched over to my profile. I’m not sure how since I haven’t put in that information anywhere.
    - Will we need to re-enter our backgrounds on the lenses? I see they are blank.
    - And this isn’t a big deal at the moment, but the profile background isn’t sticking when I leave and come back.
Sorry to throw all this your way, but I was curious what I need to do and what I just need to wait on.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/bdkz bdkz

      Great questions…

If you remove your name if your profile setting your user name will show.

You can’t add a Facebook page at this time, only a profile.

Best of…lenses do not have the ability to have a background added that’s why they have the light one.

Can you do a detailed bug report about the background not sticking? We need more information.

      Hope this helps : )

      • ChocolateLily

Thanks! Okay, how do you actually add the Facebook profile. When I click on the app, it seems to have already linked to it (I may have done it in the past and forgot, but…) I was debating on whether I wanted to link to my personal profile or not for privacy reasons.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/phjames phjames

    I like it.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/tjhousel tjhousel

So fresh and so clean, just the way I like it! Great job Squidoo.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/bdkz bdkz

      Thanks!

  • ChocolateLily

Oh, I forgot to ask about our points, levels, and trophies…what are the plans for those?

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/bdkz bdkz

We’ve retired the points and the trophies so that we have a cleaner look.

      • ChocolateLily

Oh, that’s a little disappointing. I’ll trust you guys to do what’s best, though.

      • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Comfortdoc Comfortdoc

Are they going to disappear from the dashboard too?

      • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/darkprinceofjazz darkprinceofjazz

What will be the method by which we’ll be notified of a sale?

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/nancycarol nancycarol

Thanks Bonnie, another great improvement for Squidoo!

  • http://flycatcher.squidoo.com/ flycatcher

WHY are our real names now published on our Profile pages – without prior warning or asking permission – when the Settings clearly state they will NOT be shown publicly?

    • ChocolateLily

I asked this question too. If you remove your real name in the settings, your username will show.

      • http://flycatcher.squidoo.com/ flycatcher

A little note in blog post comments for how to “fix” it after the fact is hardly satisfactory, ChocolateLily. It is a privacy violation. Personal privacy is something that some of us take quite seriously, especially on the internet, for very good reasons. There was no warning that our names were going to be made public – and no notification that it had been done. I am VERY distressed about this violation of trust.

        http://www.squidoo.com/squidoo/163794143-Squidoo-Privacy-Policy

        • ChocolateLily

I agree, which is why I asked Bonnie in the first place. I’m sure they didn’t mean to cause any distress.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/prosperity66 prosperity66

Not really agreeable to suddenly see your real name…

      • http://flycatcher.squidoo.com/ flycatcher

I would very much like to know WHY we were not given notice of this change in privacy policy, before our names were published. And it is not just a matter of my personal privacy – in one case, where, I wrote about a family matter, the privacy of my family has also been compromised.

Bonnie, some explanation of Squidoo’s thinking on this rip-away-the-veil strategy would be much appreciated, along with some explanation of why lensmasters could not be warned about it in advance???

        • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/bdkz bdkz

This has been corrected. The bio page now shows your LM name.

          • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/luvmyludwig luvmyludwig

Our first names are still showing as in “crystal’s topics” it’s ok for some of us, but not for others.

          • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/bdkz bdkz

            OK, I’ll look into this.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/prosperity66 prosperity66

The design is looking nice, however, some will have to set their screen to darker as the overall design is quite bright and not really suitable for sensitive eyes.

Also font is quite big – it might make old fashioned long lenses hard to read on mobile devices, what do you think? And the difference between the lens text size and the sidebar modules is big – especially those with product descriptions.

One question: am I dreaming or are we now allowed to upload a background to our profiles? Looks great…

Another and hopefully last question not related at all but important: have you run tests with ads? Most ads displayed on lenses are totally unrelated and include visitors’ search history. When on a lens about Halloween crafts I’m not sure they’re going to click on tire ads… Dunno if you ran a test on that but a bit more focused ads may help increase ad pool which is not really exciting these days :(

  • ChocolateLily

I’ve got a bug to report, then I plan to leave you in peace. :) The bio at the bottom of the lenses says “See full bio” after it cuts off, but when you click on it, it goes to the profile page. If we have a special bio for the page, they can’t read all of it if it is longer than the cut off point. It really doesn’t matter to me whether the bio is the same on all the pages or not, but it seems a bit misleading.

As I said, I trust you guys to do what you think is best for us all. It does look good and fresh!

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/prosperity66 prosperity66

I’m not sure readers will scroll down to the bio… too far from the interesting part of the page.

      • ChocolateLily

You have a point, but if they get that far… I wonder where the best place for the bio would be or if it is even necessary since they can click on our names to visit our profile pages.

        • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/prosperity66 prosperity66

The bio had a good place in the past… not suitable for the new design perhaps but it fitted very well where it was located.

OK didn’t see the link to our profiles on top of the page – it might perhaps benefit from an additional ‘bio’ so as to let our visitors what the link is.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/kiwinana71 kiwinana71

    Love it. Thanks HQ Squidoo.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Ramkitten Ramkitten

Bonnie, I’m noticing that what I see in the workshop often doesn’t match what I’m seeing when I view a lens. That is, sometimes some of the CSS (ie. alignment, placing smaller image credit text right below an image, even some thin borders) is no longer there in the workshop, but it’s still there (or still aligned properly) in the lens view. Sometimes the exact opposite is true. So sometimes what looks “messed up” in the workshop looks fine in the viewed lens, and sometimes vice versa. So it’s difficult to know what needs fixing and what doesn’t. Can you explain that at all or tell us if the viewed lens is the actual view? Thanks.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Ramkitten Ramkitten

Hm … I see, though, that even if it’s not messed up at first, if you do actually republish the lens, THEN it changes. So, if we don’t edit a lens for the time being, will it remain as it was until we do?

      • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/kajohu kajohu

I’m seeing that too — I hope it only changes after republishing — that will give me some time to make the changes I need to make and still have my lenses look okay.

  • http://LifeInOut.com/ Susan Deppner

I love having Lens of the Day on every lens page. Very nice!

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/MSchindel MSchindel

Bonnie, really great execution of a wonderful design concept!

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/StrongMay StrongMay

    Hi Bonnie,
None of the comments on any lens I visit are showing up anymore :(. It’s kind of hard to file a report on every lens on Squidoo….
Any chance we can get a link to the Topics page back?
I also noticed the ads and recommended lenses on the various lenses aren’t exactly topic-related.
On the plus side, the featured lenses on the bio page really are featured now (although fewer of them)!

This is going to take getting used to… the bits and pieces that I came to know and love as Squidoo and that set the site apart from the rest of the internet are slowly being replaced.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/artyfax artyfax

Yes I have also noticed that none of the lens’s comments are showiing

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/kajohu kajohu

Same here — no comments showing on my lenses – just the names of the people who have commented.

    • ChocolateLily

“This is going to take getting used to… the bits and pieces that I came to know and love as Squidoo and that set the site apart from the rest of the internet are slowly being replaced.”

      Well said, StrongMay.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/bdkz bdkz

The comments not showing up is a bug, we’ll work on that.

Let me find about about the topics page.

The ad issue could be a bug too, we can look into that.

Thanks for the feedback and questions!

    • Guest

Comments are showing on my lenses either. Just the person’s name who commented (and their photo).

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/esmonaco esmonaco

Looks fantastic, I haven’t taken it for a full drive yet, but will do so Thanks to all!!!

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Comfortdoc Comfortdoc

Any chance of being able to change our old LensMaster name?

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/d-artist d-artist

Hmmm, some getting used to and I’m sure bugs will be fixed, so rather then make my opinion I’ll wait till the dust is settled…wow…that’s large text, good for us old folk I guess ;-)

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/peterduck peterduck

Bonnie, I’ve submitted a bug report as in the Amazon modules that list products, the text I entered is now truncated and the buttons are missing if there are more than 4 lines of text. We were told to write plenty about the products! Hope that can be fixed soon. (I checked another and it is truncating it after 2 or 3 lines, and truncating the images too.)

also as someone said below, text from comments has disappeared leaving just the commentor’s avatar.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/CalobrenaOmai CalobrenaOmai

Hope the amazon bug gets fixed soon. I information I included gives an overview of the product I’m featuring.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/bdkz bdkz

Thanks for filing a bug report for this problem, that will help us figure this out.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Janiece Janiece

I’m having the same experience with the text being truncated on Amazon modules. Do I need to fill out a bug report as well? Or is this a problem almost everyone is having?

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/CalobrenaOmai CalobrenaOmai

What typeface is being utilized in the new design? Can’t see comments on my lens and am having a hard time leaving comments..

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/favored1 favored1

Is there a way to click off the black box with all the titles at the top?

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/bdkz bdkz

I don’t believe so, Those are the Best of…topic.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/partybuzz partybuzz

My only complaint is that I don’t like the font that’s being used. It’s hard to read. It’s plenty big, could even be smaller, it’s the font itself I don’t like. Sorry guys, guess it’s just me. But, maybe it will grow on me.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/bdkz bdkz

Thanks for the feedback : )

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/favored1 favored1

Bonnie where are the trophies, points and purple stars? How can we see them?

    • ChocolateLily

From what Bonnie told me, they are gone. Some people are happy, others not so much, but hopefully everything will be better in the end. Don’t know about the purple stars, though.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/bdkz bdkz

We had to retire the trophies and points in order to achieve the cleaner look.

      • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/d-artist d-artist

        YES, :-)

      • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/StrongMay StrongMay

        WHAT?!? Why???
I don’t see a cleaner look. I see a ton more of advertisements instead. The trophies and points didn’t take that up much room…
I guess I’m just one of those who is disappointed in the changes. Every change has a couple such people, and I’m sorry I’m one of them.

        • ChocolateLily

You’re not alone, but I’m hoping all will be better for it. (Fingers crossed!)

        • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/CalobrenaOmai CalobrenaOmai

hey wait… does that mean giant squids are gone too?

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/marsha32 marsha32

I was just in updating and noticed the change in looks right away.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/happynutritionist happynutritionist

    Love the nice clean look:-)

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/CosmeticMom CosmeticMom

It does look different. A cleaner look. I think I like the links at the top for other topics, but shouldn’t they be in alphabetic order?

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/FreshStart7 FreshStart7

    Looks GREAT Bonnie!

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/scarlettohairy scarlettohairy

Thanks for the heads up. I’m off to change the background on my bio page.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/josephchen josephchen

    awesome!

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/flinnie flinnie

The new look is very nice and I like it. There is a lot that gone that I miss, other wise good design.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Titia Titia

I don’t mind the retirement of points and trophies much, but I do mind
the loss of the Purple Star showing on a lens. Did you retire the Purple
    Star program too?

Like many others I find the overall font very
big and in some cases (themes) even very ugly looking. So I’ll have to
    find another theme for those.

    Amazon thumbnails. They should
have a different format because they all look very long stretched and
you hardly can see what’s in the picture. I still can’t change the
display options in the Amazon module (using FF). If I want to change
from thumbnails back to normal, I have to add a new module and put in
the products all over. I’ve send in a few bug reports on that in the
past, but never got an anwser back, nor is it fixed.

Where are the buttons for FB liking and Pinterest??? I only see the Squid likes and the number of comments on any of my lenses.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/terilass terilass

We have retired points and trophy but have we also retired the giant squid program etc. as well? No worries, just curious. If no big squid then we don’t need to maintain 50 lenses?

    • ChocolateLily

I’m wondering about the Giant Squid program too.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/asphyxia asphyxia

This redesign is phenomenal. I absolutely love that Squidoo is using a universal font on all of its lenses now (and a great looking font at that!). Seriously great update, guys.

A couple of questions / possible bugs:
    1. I can’t seem to add more than one product to Amazon modules. Is that a new limit and I missed the announcement? Modules that already have multiple products in them are still showing up fine but I can’t delete an existing product and add something else.
    2. Also in Amazon modules, the header is showing up as an Amazon link and the subheader is completely gone. Bug or intentional?
    3. Photos that are added to text modules via code can’t be formatted. I used to format my photos to have rounded corners, a certain pixel height/width, etc. but now they’re just showing up huge and square. Bug or is this meant to encourage us to use the photo upload tab in the text module?

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/darkprinceofjazz darkprinceofjazz

IMHO I find the font too be way too big. I have to adjust down to 90% to be comfortable reading. I wonder how many people would go to that trouble or just click away? I do like the cleaner design though.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Jodi_k Jodi_k

I suspect the first two problems are bugs. The third is because CSS is no longer supported.

      • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/asphyxia asphyxia

Thanks for the heads up on the CSS, Jodi_k! I totally missed that announcement. :)

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/darkprinceofjazz darkprinceofjazz

I can not upload a back ground or new profile photo to my profile. Also: Is HTML no longer allowed in the profile? I did submit bug reports.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Titia Titia

I’ve uploaded my background several times, but it won’t stay. I can’t change the lens bio either.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Titia Titia

Has nobody noticed the disappearance of the FB like, G+ and Pinterest buttons on all the lenses???

    • http://LifeInOut.com/ Susan Deppner

      I see them in Firefox.

      • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Titia Titia

I’m not seeing them on any lens, not only my own. I’ve FF 31.0 installed only a few months ago when I got my new pc.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/terilass terilass

Do you see the rest of the new set up? Is it just the buttons that are missing? Sometimes if you clear your history so all cookies are cleared etc. that fixes this kind of problem.
To clear on Fire Fox go to Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): “Clear Now”

      • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Titia Titia

I followed your lead, but there’s nothing to clear.

  • sockii

My big peeve right now is that only 3 of our 6 related lenses are showing any longer, and now we are forced to display 3 “More pages in” that we do not have the ability to choose and select in our sidebar. I do not want spammy, snake oil disease cures/affiliate products and lenses filled with stolen graphics, plagiarized content, and off-topic marketing on my lenses when I’ve previously carefully vetted and selected the other lenses I’ve linked to. It undermines the message I even have specifically stated in some of my health-related lenses about not being there to promote fake claims and the integrity of my work.

    • http://LifeInOut.com/ Susan Deppner

I think the solution to that, sockii, is to write compelling content that leads your reader to a link where you’d like for them to go next. In other words, get them reading straight down to the bottom of your lens (without looking at the sidebar) to your bio (placed at the bottom of the lens automatically) where they can find more of your best work. That should be every writer’s goal, in my opinion.

      • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/terilass terilass

I understand what you are saying Susan however, the bio is after the comments. I doubt many readers are going to read through the comments or even scroll past them to the bottom of the page no matter the content of the lens.

        • http://LifeInOut.com/ Susan Deppner

Set your comments module to display only a few comments. That will help. Note that probably half of people who view Squidoo do it on a mobile device (that percentage will rise during the holiday shopping season) and the sidebar on mobile is below the bio. Text, guestbook, bio, then sidebar contents.

          • http://LifeInOut.com/ Susan Deppner

BTW, most of us will lose people far before they get to the comments section. Give them a few links in the body of the lens to help guide them where you want them to go.

          • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/terilass terilass

This is a much better answer to sockii’s problem. You created a lens that explained how to put links in the body of a lens awhile back, maybe a link to it would help her.

          • sockii

Don’t need help, thanks, I know plenty about creating links in text; I’ve been creating websites and writing html since 1995. It’s more that I’m moving content back to my own sites now and other platforms where they will be better formatted and complemented by proper content. I just dislike having lenses I do not approve of showing up in the sidebar of my own lenses and hard work. Cheers.

      • sockii

It’s not about getting them to more of MY work. I want them to see content specific to a topic I am deeply passionate about and means a lot to me personally, that may or may not be written by me. I don’t like seeing content I haven’t vetted and selected displayed in the sidebar on my lenses – especially when some of that content is articles I distinctly don’t agree with.

And every writer has the right to have his or her own goals. I think it’s a bit presumptive to assume that my goals may or should be the same as yours or anyone else’s.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/kimmilai kimmilai

    Love the changes, thank you!

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Ramkitten Ramkitten

Sorry if I missed this below, but when there’s just one product in an Amazon module, not only is the module title and subtitle missing (or, well, the title is now a link where the product title/link should be), but all the content in the top description box has been combined with the product description below. I really hope THAT’s a bug, because it’s blending personal and “other” related information with the specific product description (original, not copied from Amazon … just sayin’) and making some of those things way too long. I hope the top box will be once again separated from the item description.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/kimmilai kimmilai

When I try to change from my user name to my real name, it won’t let me do it in profile. Is this a future fix or am I doing it wrong? :)

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/d-artist d-artist

If you go to your Dashboard click Settings (Blue file tab) it will show you this-

A very nice look for sure, but the constant ‘pop ups’ and ‘ads from other sites’ are maddening. At every turn, no matter how many times you close them, new one’s pop up? Is THAT the ‘new look’ for Squidoo?

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Karen1960 Karen1960

“Remember you can choose the background of your bio page.” – could you remind me how, please, because I see nothing in the profile settings to assist. Thanks

    It is good:)

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/d-artist d-artist

Bonnie do you know what happened to the ability to change the background of your bio page? I had a “change” word before, now nothing, even my background is gone….a BUG maybe?

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/KonaGirl KonaGirl

As with all changes it will take some getting use to. I understand the need to remove the ability to use any color CSS in the text as too many abused it, but I don’t like not having the ability to make changes to font size and text alignment. The font in the titles are so huge I feel like I am being screamed at.

I also do not like not having the ability to wrap text around image links if I choose to put images side by side, in the middle of text, or a few paragraphs down from where Squidoo’s basic left, center and right downloads permit. I have to make a lot more changes to remedy these things in order to have the pages look right again. With over 400 lens to change I still haven’t completed the last changes (107 more to go – whoot!) and now I have to start all over again. Sigh.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/ajgodinho ajgodinho

Yes, I totally agree. I do appreciate change and the need to change. I can understand making changes like these to discourage using color CSS and to maintain some sort of consistency. And I do like the overall “look and feel”…

However, the things that you mentioned above, like having some control over font size and aligning images and text (left, right, center), are essential. Many of my lenses in which I had embedded images are looking horrible because the text is not wrapping around the image.

On many of the Amazon and AllPosters images that I had embedded are now misalgined making the lenses look really messed up. This is yet another change that Squidoo HQ has implemented haphazardly with no reasonable time to fix lenses.

Like you said, many lensmasters have tons of lenses to correct and until they are corrected, the lenses are going to look very untidy and unprofessional. This can only drive visitors away from the Squidoo and cause yet another drastic drop in traffic.

Sorry I can’t be quite as optimistic as everyone else here, but all of my pages look very sloppy now and I have to go in and correct each one of them. I figured when I saw that the update was coming that this was going to happen but I nevertheless can’t help but being upset by it.

Coupled along with all of the lenses I’ve had unjustly locked due to the entirely overly sensitive spam detector, the complete lack of user support to get such things resolved (even after going through the locked pages and making hours and hours worth of edits), and the last changes you all made, where I also had to go in and make 70-something changes to my pages, I can barely find the motivation to make new lenses anymore. Because who knows when they’ll be tampered with or removed again. Sigh, I miss my old Squdioo.

    Sorry. I had to vent.

HI Bonnie, Overall, I am loving the new design. Just one question – you mentioned earlier that there would be a link to our blog or website in these options. Is that still going to happen?

Can’t wait to try it out. Looks more streamlined and a lot simpler.
