Yahoo Media Player Update

Bonnie Diczhazy by on Fri, Feb 17th, 2012

Just a heads up that we’ve disabled the Yahoo Media Player that formerly enabled lensmasters to play their own MP3 files directly on their lenses.

Of the lensmasters who used this feature, they generally used it to provide background music entertainment for visitors while they browsed a lens. We have no plans to revive this feature as it was.

PS – Did you know It’s Random Acts of Kindness Day!

I could see how the media player could cause some copyright issues, but hopefully it will be replaced with something as equally awesome.

If we really want to look into copyright issues, I guess we could equally say that the video module is just as guilty – after all, we can use it to play whole songs

it really does not matter at all. if my visitors are using google chrome browser, they can also hear some music from my lens. thank you for informing us.

Interesting to know, will there be a new option for playing music on our lenses?

Recently, I heard music while browsing one of the lenses. So this is the cause of the sound I was hearing. Now, I know there is a feature that exists in Squidoo but as of now it is disabled by the staff. Anyway, I think background music is not necessary in a lens because it can distract our reading. Thanks for informing us. :)

Never thought the media player was worth the effort. On the other hand, random acts of kindness is, but I thought that was every day.

I never understood why some pages auto played.  Mine never did. I guess I used it differently.
I will miss that module more than any other thing that has ever been discontinued on this site.  I have a lot of lenses that used that module heavily.  I record public domain work (and my writing). The Velveteen Rabbit, lots and lots of poetry… I did go and check one and see that my short files do still play, just not directly on the page.  Most files are hosted on Audioboo, so clicking “Listen” takes the reader to a separate page where they play. But long files on Mediafire (The Velveteen Rabbit) now go to a download only page — I doubt many people will download from someone they don’t know.
I remember that when I first started on Squidoo, musicians were clamoring for a music player module… and glad to get that.  I guess the problem is some people use modules in a manner other than how they were intended.

I was disappointed to learn this. I had only recently been aware that putting music on a lens was possible, and was really looking forward putting coffeehouse jazz on my site to add atmosphere to the Coffee House experience. :(   Since Bonnie said, “We have no plans to revive this feature as it was,” I’m clinging to the possibility that the awesome Squidoo folks have something as good or better in the works for us. :)

I was one of the people who really begged for the media player and use it on 1/3 of my lenses to showcase the music of my bands and cds/record company. without a way to play our music there is no point in a music lens at all. and no warning? just pull it? at least when the clearspring module was disabled there was a year of warning.
