Dashboard updates: Activity Stream A/B Testing and more

Megan Casey by on Tue, Jan 24th, 2012

We just released a few small updates to the lensmaster dashboard. The updates are intended to remove a little bit of clutter, and also to help us collect some data so we can figure out the right way to show a lensmaster his ‘activity and messages’ separately from his lens inventory. Especially for accounts that have very long lists of lenses, or lots of good activity that they’re not seeing.

This update includes:

– Removed the ‘Facebook Open Graph’ tagging reminder that was fixed in the sidebar. Getting your lenses all tagged up for the Open Graph is still important, but there is a prompt within the Workshop for untagged lenses. Didn’t want to keep the clutter on your dashboard.

– We moved the Recent Trophies list to live only on the Activity page, in an effort to consolidate some Squidgaming elements and clean up your Lens List tab.

– The main part of the update is this: We updated the Activity page (for some lensmasters*) to show a combined stream of recently earned Squidpoints, Quests, and HQ news in one place.

* Only half of lensmasters will see the new Activity design and elements. The other half will continue seeing the old version of that page for now. After we collect some data, we can decide whether it makes sense to expand on the new design and create a more robust ‘messages and activity’ stream that is valuable and actionable for tracking your own interests and activity and news on Squidoo.

– We also changed what the default landing page is when visiting the Dashboard. For most lensmasters, this test makes the Activity page (old or new) the new default when you visit /lensmaster/dashboard. The exceptions are Giant Squids and some batches of new lensmasters that fall in different A/B tests we’re running. If your new dashboard landing page default is now the Activity page and you’d rather land first on the Lens List, you can easily set an override by clicking the “Make this my main page” link visible on either the Lenses or Activity page (visible only when the page is not the default). We’re running these tests to see how different kinds of lensmasters engage with different SquidActivity they see, to help surface new Quests and integrate HQ conversations, and to get closer to a solution where we can show interesting streams of activity and messages that result in positive action. Without just dumping it all on one page and calling it soup!

In short, not much you need to do, if anything. Just wanted to let you know that we’re trying a few very small tests in order to work our way (based on data and not just anecdotes) to a better organized dashboard.

    Awesome!

Removing the trophies from the dashboard is fantastic!  Now I don’t need to be forever scrolling down every single time I go to my dashboard to use the tools.  I haven’t had a good look at the rest of the changes, but I’m over the moon about the trophy removal.  It’s easy enough to find them if you want them.

Ok I know this is a test and it seems I’m affected.  So I’ve got to comment (of course) I LOVE seeing HQ news on my activity stream!!  There are so many great things happening on Squidoo all the time that I forget (bad me) to look at the HQ regularly, placing it right in front of my nose so to speak keeps me updated and involved!!

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/AdrienneJenkins AdrienneJenkins

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOve seeing the Squidoo HQ news on the activity screen. My regular e-mail gets clogged with so much junk mail but I love having it on this stream where it’s most relevant. Thanks Megan and Squidoo HQ, Gil, Tom and you’all for continually working through improvements. It is most appreciated.

Is there any chance of an RSS feed being added to the Activity page? It would make it easier to keep track of what’s happening on our lenses.

    • Megan Casey

What kind of data would be in the lens RSS feed you’re imagining?

      • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Solitudinarian Solitudinarian

Hi Megan, pretty much what I see in my stream now: new comments, likes, HQ news, LOTD. If I can access that from my feed reader I don’t need to keep visiting my dashboard or email to keep up-to-date.

I can just click on a link to answer a comment, or go to a commentator’s profile page, or come over here for news. It seems a fast easy way to cover most of what I need from one place.

        • http://www.gilhildebrand.com/afterthought giltotherescue

Currently activity streams are private, so this might be tricky to implement due to authentication. That being said, I can see how it would be useful, and we will keep this in mind for the future.

Some good looking, functional changes.  Always improving.  Thanks!  Love the update in the “Activity” section.  Almost missed it, so I’ll be more aware from now on, super job.

I like the new format, it appears that it is more efficient and saves space for developments that you come up with in the future.  I’m glad you mentioned it here, however, I may not have noticed otherwise.:~)  See you around the galaxy…

Thanks for letting me in on the new Dashboard. I love it! Showing HQ news and quests along with my points is great! I feel more connected to Squidoo with these updates. Please keep them!

    • Bonnie Diczhazy

Thanks for the feedback. Love that you feel more connected to Squidoo!

  • Jeff Vance

Can you put the magazine stuff somewhere else also?

Thank you, thank you for getting rid of trophies on dashboard.

  • James Bowen

I love the new activity page! Great way to stay in the loop. Thanks for the update.

I have seen the new change on someone else’s dashboard, and I don’t like it at all.

If I want to see HQ info I can get that at any time by signing up for emails or viewing them by going to the bottom of my dashboard.

Many of us use the activity stream as a notebook of where we have been and who has visited us.  What quizzes we have taken and where we left off on the long ones.

Not every lensmaster gets on every day.  How are we supposed to know which squid angel blessed our lens if the info is only retained for a 24 hour period?

Changes of this nature should be presented to the lensmasters for their choosing.  To find your entire lensmaster history gone with one flip of a Squidoo HQ switch is truly a devastating thing.

Someone commented above that this makes them feel more connected to Squidoo.  I feel that it is doing just the opposite.  Please don’t do it to mine!  And give those who are currently affected by it the right to return to the original format.

    • http://www.gilhildebrand.com/ giltotherescue

      Thanks for your feedback Jim.

We have made a change to the number of points notifications available on the Activity page, but the change was to raise the maximum from 100 to 200 (it is not based on an arbitrary date range like 24 hours). When you first view the page, we show you the 20 most recent, and by clicking See More you can see 20 more at a time all the way to 200. This update does add HQ and Quests into the mix, but it does not in any way hide your points history.

I think I will like the new look, especially the addition of HQ News. I want to stay as current as possible and sometimes I forget to check the News. This new format will help me keep up to date on the news as well as my activity. I can check my lenses anytime after the news.

  • http://www.facebook.com/shepherdhike Nancy Shepherd

Oooh, I like that the trophies disappeared! And that the Quests are now listed newest on top. The activity stream will just take some getting used to. What about adding the Items to the stream? I never think to check behind that tab, so I don’t know when I’ve unlocked something new. And when I do remember to check, I can’t remember if I’ve used it or not.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1180458242 Beck Williams-Fletcher

I think it’s a bit of a pain having the quests in my activity stream because they are something else to scroll through when I want to revisit a lens I’ve already liked or blessed, plus I keep tabs on the quests I’ve already completed anyway so I know how many I have remaining.

With that said though, I feel that this is a great idea for new squids on the block because the quests will be simpler to find, I know it took forever to find the “Quests” tab to start with, so keep up the good work, developers

Okay, I’m one of the few who does not like this. I do not like doing the
quests, so I prefer it how it used to be. And I also am not that
interested in having things like Lens of the Day show up in the same
area where I can keep track of whether something has sold from one of my
modules, who has commented on what lens or liked a lens, etc. It seems more of a mess of information overload to me. Sorry.

That’s how it’s looking to me, too.  I keep going back to it, hoping to find it more useful than my first impression.  But I’m not.  What I want to see feels lost in the noise (desired: Sales, comments, likes).  Quests was something I chose not to keep up with.  Important HQ news (like dashboard changes) is blended with less important HQ notifications I already get multiple times in my FB activity stream.  (Less important: tips best suited to newbies, lens promotion, new lensmaster promotion).  The ability to filter which items show in my feed by a permanent check box would be AWESOME.

  • http://www.facebook.com/elsie.hagley Elsie Hagley

I like the new changes. All fine with me.
    Thanks.

  • Adrienne Jenkins

SUGGESTION: After you hit publish, it defaults to the ACTIVITY tab. Can you please have it default back to the LENSES tab. On a day when I’m doing a lot of publishing, it’s one extra step to have to go back to the LENSES tab. I don’t think it diminishes the impact of the new updates because at least once/day I check my point to find out about my daily sales. I like having all the updates but I don’t want to keep being reminded over 20 times a day. It’s too distracting. Oh wait….I see your note about changing the default. So off to change this to see how that works out…..Thanks for thinking of everything.

    • Adrienne Jenkins

There used to be an extra feed from SquidUtils that showed how many sales in the last 24 hours. That doesn’t seem to appear any more. If this activity feed is showing more activity, will there be a quick way to see the previous day’s sales?

Also agreed with others, since there’s already a separate QUESTS tab, don’t think there’s a need to have them show up again in the ACTIVITY feed.

Truthfully, the most relevant thing I check everyday are my SALES. Don’t really care about the points for every like, comments, etc. So in some ways, like the Squidoo HQ highlighted/shaded updates, I wouldn’t mind seeing my sales on a separate tab OR highlighted.

    • http://www.gilhildebrand.com/ giltotherescue

At the top of your Lenses page there should be a little “Make this my main page” link which will default you to the Lenses page instead of the Activity page. Here’s what it looks like: http://cl.ly/1C2P2U100G2M1K281G1M. This preference is automatically set for Giant Squids.

  • Yaya Erickson

Help!  Help!  Where did all my past activity go?  I was using that.  Please, please, Please put it back.  I needed that.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/dogface Matias

    Looking good. My two cents:

    - For some weird reason I can’t open a link in the activity stream (like a link to a lensmaster’s page who liked my lens etc.) by middle-clicking (or holding ctrl and left-clicking) the link – the link opens in the current window. I don’t know why is that, but I don’t like it. :P

    - Also, “someone voted in the poll x on your lens y” is imo unnecessary. It doesn’t say who voted (and shouldn’t either) and these notifications oftentimes fill the activity stream leaving no room for other, more important notifications. http://i.imgur.com/zy79b.png

    • http://www.gilhildebrand.com/ giltotherescue

#1: That’s strange. I noticed it too. Will take a look to see why it’s blocking links from opening in a new window.

#2: I noticed this also. We’re tuning down the frequency of poll vote notifications.

  • Yaya Erickson

I know I a’ready expressed how I feel ’bout the new additions, but I would really like your help please.  I like the way that you have added access to HQ information an’ stuff, but would it be possible for you to make it so’s the two forms of information are separate?

Jus’ add another button to the bar across the top of my dashboard an’ lemme’ be able to access all my information from it.  Then, have another button so’s I can access the HQ information, ok?  Please?

I really Neeeeeeed that information.  Won’t you please fix it?  Please?  Thank you for alla’ things you do, but I really need that information.

  • http://twitter.com/travelswmiranda Travels With Miranda

I like the dashboard look without the annoying OpenGraph reminder. I miss my trophies, but do agree that the dashboard looks less cluttered and there’s less scrolling. I wouldn’t go back. So thumbs up there. I’m not so sure how I feel about the activity stream. It doesn’t look like a major change and yet it feels off. Will live with it for a bit and see if I can figure out what irks me about it. I would be annoyed if my default was to go to my activity stream and am glad that that can be changed if needed. *TravelingRae

  • http://www.facebook.com/stacy.l.hardin Stacy Lou Hardin

I would like pages instead of scrolling, that to me is a change that would be useful.  Because we have to scroll looking for who has liked us, who has commented on our page and if I haven’t been on in awhile I have lots of things to check out, the streams seem endless and I always end up accidentally clicking on one of the items and when I go back I am at the top of the activity or point stream and I have to start all over and pray you don’t mess up again.

Plus what used to be the point stream is now bogged down with more things, but if we could scroll page numbers instead of endless scrolling that would make it a plus in my book.

    • http://www.facebook.com/stacy.l.hardin Stacy Lou Hardin

I also miss the trophies, the page looks dull and lifeless without those adorable little monsters cheering me on to write more lenses.

    • http://www.gilhildebrand.com/ giltotherescue

Would it be helpful if the links opened in a new tab/window? That way you wouldn’t lose your place in the stream.

  • Anonymous

The look of the new activity stream is fine with me.
However, the list of ‘non activity’ items goes on forever, while my lens activity seems to be truncated at one day or less.

For example – it tells me that there was voting for community favorites some 27 days ago (voting now closed)  but I do NOT see visitors, angel blesslngs, etc from as recently as YESTERDAY.

    • http://www.gilhildebrand.com/ giltotherescue

Sounds like a bug. You should not be seeing only one day’s worth of points history. We’ll look into it right away.

      • Anonymous

        Thank you!

      • http://www.gilhildebrand.com/ giltotherescue

It looks like the problem is that you have such a busy stream! We provide access to the 200 most recent points events, but that only covers a day or two for you. Shortly we’ll be expanding it to up to 500 points events in your history. Hope this helps.

        • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Greekgeek Greekgeek

That won’t help members with a ton of lenses. My quiz lenses are always going to blast out my history because I get scores of quiz-takers a day. With Fluff’s filter, I was able to block out the quiz points and all the other stuff I didn’t care diddly about, and just focus on sales. But if you’re only giving us a record of the past 500 items, for those of us with 300-500 lenses and a ton of user interaction, we’re still going to lose sales data if we can’t get on to check it every day.

I loved Fluff’s tool letting us choose which stuff in the activity stream to see. I’d have loved it even more if there had been preferences I could’ve set to specify, “Show me sales and comments — I don’t need to see all the rest.” I don’t do quests; they’re almost never in my niche. I don’t do points — I’m here to earn a living, sorry! I just need to interact with my readers and keep track of what’s selling.

We all use Squidoo in different ways. Let’s have a tool like fluff’s that lets each of us see the information we need — customizing it to how we use Squidoo — instead of taking information away.

          • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/kevinw1 kevinw1

I only have 74 lenses but I have some very active polls – so I end up with only one day’s history of my own stuff, and the rest filled with HQ items I have already seen.

While I think it’s a good idea to have the HQ stuff in there, I’d rather it was in its own tab rather than in the activity stream for *my* lenses.

          • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/giltotherescue giltotherescue

Thanks for providing details about how you use the activity stream. I think we can accomodate your requests. Will get back to you soon.

          • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/WordCustard WordCustard

Yes, this is my issue. I don’t mind the Activity stream being tweaked but I don’t want to lose the data is most important to me, i.e. the record of my recent sales. At the moment other activity seems to be pushing that important data into oblivion.

  • Robert Gasperson

I love the idea of having the quest and HQ announcements on my activity page. This will help me know what new things are happening. Thank you so much for this change.

  • http://www.allconsidering.com/ Katinka Hesselink

I love the fact that the trophies are now not so prominent any more.
A small bug seems to have crept in on the new activity tab: the sales aren’t dated properly any more. Since the main reason to GO to the activity tab is to get a quick overview of the sales I had on that day, this is a major bummer.

I don’t mind the quick links to HQ activity and quests. Just don’t mess up the rest of the stream.

BTW – somehow Discus doesn’t seem to recognize me, even though I’m logged into squidoo.

    • http://www.gilhildebrand.com/ giltotherescue

We’re releasing a fix shortly for the date problem on sales.

Disqus login problem looks like a bug. We’re on it!

  • Kimberly Dawn Wells

It’s exciting to see so many people are liking the new changes. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  • http://www.delovesto.com poddys

Ahh that explains what they were talking about on SquidU.  As a Giant I haven’t really noticed any major differences (which doesn’t mean there aren’t any – I was just focused on editing a lens).

Definitely any changes that make it easier to get to my stats and settings are good to have, especially things that save me from having to keep scrolling down.

  • Cliff Hoffman

I like it with the new lending page setting, I can see and get to know new update on my lenses and also and news from the SquidHQ, that is great and useful.

  • http://twitter.com/Flynn_the_Cat Flynn the Cat

General dislike. Though it may just be breakage, rather than deliberate design.

I don’t mind having the quests and news stuff in the feed, that’s fine and handy. I do mind that:

    a) I’ve lost all my activity stats but quizzes, comments and sales (interaction is awesome information)
    b) they only go back a day (really? I loved having a history of stuff. especially if I go away)
    c)  It broke Fluff’s add-on to sort everything by type. I’m sure he’ll fix it soon, but a built in filter like that would be AWESOME – when I don’t have it, I usually don’t bother browsing the activity tab, but when I do, I use it frequently.

  • http://twitter.com/Flynn_the_Cat Flynn the Cat

Oh, like having the trophies only on the activity page – handy, but where they belong and out of the way.

  • JoAnne Smith

Guess I’m one of the exceptions, but I absolutely *hate* the co-mingling of quests, news etc. within my activity stream.  I don’t want that extra *clutter* within my activity stream, which I use for monitoring my sites’ activity and as an aid to know who has SquidLiked, angel blessed,  commented, etc. so I can thank them and check out some of their lenses.  My activity streams are quite long each day, so what I’m now seeing usually won’t even include a whole hour, let alone a day.  Plus, I’m really behind and NEED access to my historical activity data!!

I have a lot of poll and quiz activity.  It’s important to me to see which batch of quizzes and polls is being responded to so that I know what people like.    This provides very helpful feedback for me.  [Not every participant SquidLikes a lens, and some visitors SquidLike only and don't otherwise participate.  So I can't rely on the number of SquidLikes for this feedback.]

If the new co-mingled structure is permanently set into place, it’ll no longer meet my needs and I’ll probably just stop even looking at it.  Sorry, but the new system being tested is much less helpful to me than the previous version.  Please, please!! don’t change to the new test system.

Perhaps the quests and HQ news items could be listed in a separate tab on our dashboard.  But that info. is already easily accessible through the drop-down “Helps & Tips” menu at the top of my dashboard.  And quests we’re eligible for are already in our Quests tab.  And if a quest hasn’t been made available to me, then I don’t even care to know about it until the quest is over and the monsterboard has been posted.  Again, that is already availavle in the Helps & Tips > SquidooHQ Blog tab at the top of the dashboard page.

One thing that I would like to see is to somehow be able to download my entire activity stream so I can better keep track of who I’ve followed up with, etc.  Then be able to download more recent activity over a given date range (at least a month’s worth) thereafter.

  • Shari OLeary

I liked seeing my trophies on the dashboard, and I like having my lenses being my home page.  I”ll be overriding the default you guys put in place for sure.  If I want to see what’s going on at HQ, I can click the link to it.  I don’t like the new look at all.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/JoyfulReviewer JoyfulReviewer

Increasing the activity stream results from 200 to 500 will definitely help, but it still won’t cover an active day for me.  And sometimes we can’t be on tne computer every day to catch things before they “scroll off the stream”.

If you do decide to go to this new activity stream, could you please temporarily reinstate the old stream with our complete history and give us a good week to go in and *retrieve* as much as we can?  To have something that is beneficial and completely relied upon [i.e., our historical activity stream] *suddenly* unavailable without warning is very dis-heartening!

Except for this sudden test/change, I am very pleased with Squidoo’s efforts to help its lensmasters.  And I am truly amazed with everything that goes on in the background to keep track of all these details and update our dashboards in real time!

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/marciag marciag

I’m not sure how I feel about the Activity changes – I can’t find for example the blessings of the last few days. I have a lens that I keep updated with the latest blessed lenses and now I can’t find that information to add to my lens – nor can I go back and thank the lensmasters for their blessings. Nor can I find the sales…or the other things I am so used to (don’t care about trophys though).

Basically I’m missing my history (yes, I’ve been known to go back weeks and even months to check on something). Can we get those back please?

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Greekgeek Greekgeek

    Eep! Wait!

Please do NOT wipe out the only organized place we had to track sales!

The rest of the points/activities stream was irrelevant for those of us who are using Squidoo professionally, but the at-a-glance record of sales — not just today’s, but going back at least a month — was vital. Fluff had given us a handy tool to sort out the sales data and hide all the signal noise. It was the only place where we could get an easy-to-read list of which lenses have made sales and what they’ve sold.

The new “improved” activity stream only shows information about our own lenses for today, and HQ posts going back at least a month. Could we reverse that, maybe? Or at least give us some way to access our sales data, since for many of us, that’s a heckuva lot more important than Kipsy and Bipsy and Quests?

If you want to improve the activity stream for experienced/professional squids, give us a quick link right in the “sales” announcements on the activities tab pointing to the ‘royalties’ tab of the corresponding lens so we can see the estimated earnings. It’s a weekly chore having to sift through the activity stream for our sales records, filter out all the noise, click each lens that made a sale and open it in a new tab so we don’t lose Fluff’s filtered version of the stream, then click the “royalties” link on each open lens, just to find out how much the estimated royalty was. Yes, we know it’s an estimate, but it still helps us.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/giltotherescue giltotherescue

There is now a dedicated “Sales” filter to help view your recent sales. Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, the load time of this filter is not as fast as we’d like. In the long term, it’s probably best if we approach the problem of viewing aggregate sales history using a special page in the My Stats portion of the site (similar to the Statement page we use for showing earnings and payments). The Sales filter is a stopgap measure until we have an opportunity to create the page I’ve described.

      • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/kevinw1 kevinw1

Glad to see the dedicated Sales tab Gil, thanks! I don’t mind if it loads a bit slowly as I’m not referring to it multiple times a day.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Jodi_k Jodi_k

Is this working now? Test test.

I like having everything in one place, and notices from HQ.

I don’t like that it seems to break SquidUtils though (I assume Fluff can fix that once things are settled?).  Also everything, except for HQ notices, seems to have the same date!

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/KathyMcGraw KathyMcGraw

I logged in and saw the quests and HQ news taking over my page.  I also noticed the pictures of the lenses or lensmasters were now on the left, not the right.  Since I don’t do the trophies or points, I used this page to find out what sales if any I had, who visited and the lenses I visited.  It made navigating the important things easy for me.

The other things were just as easy to do…if I wanted to know about a quest, I clicked that tab, and if I wanted to know what HQ had to say I clicked that tab in the help section.  Now, it seems the page is a conglomeration where I have to weed through stuff to find what I want.

Another point is the forum was a place to get info, and maybe HQ should post over there again if they are concerned with us getting the info.  All the tips for newbies have nothing to do with many of us, nor are quests if we don’t typically take them.  I just want a simple way to find the info “I” need, not what someone else wants me to have. And the points tab was doing that just fine before this change!

Thanks for working to improve the activity stream!  I learned early on from veteran lensmasters that it is good to thank other lensmasters for their visits and squidlikes and to thank Squid Angels for their blessings.  This is going to be hard to do with only one day of history showing up in the activity stream.  Please consider changing the history back to the way it was.  Thanks!

Hey, my little notes for sales, likes, blessings, etc have disappeared.  Why were they removed?

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Flynn_the_Cat Flynn_the_Cat

Fluff’s add-on just got broke by the changes is all.

HQ News I can get easily enough. SquidQuests? Ditto.

It’s vital to me to be able to see which lenses are selling what products, which lenses have been blessed, which lenses are getting a lot of interaction and activity through polls and quizzes and voting. I’m really not thrilled to be hearing that this is going to become a lot more difficult.

Why not some way we can selectively choose what information we do and don’t want in our activity stream?

Additional feedback (not intended to be critical):

    1) Do we *really* need to know that an action happened 48 seconds or 12 minutes or 18 hours ago?  Personally, I prefer just the date.  We already know that the most recent actions happened more recently than those that appear further down the activity stream.

    2) Seeing that so much of the valuable history data is now gone, and newer activity will soon scroll off my active activity stream, I’m finding that I’m spending waaaay too much time trying to save what data I can.  [I can't even imagine what's happening to those lensmasters with hundreds of lenses, many quite active.]  I don’t want to lose this data, but bottom line, I’m not getting *real* work done.  This “improvement” is making things way more complicated … please, PLEASE, bring back the old system and give us the choice of what, and how much, we want to see … to meet OUR needs.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/giltotherescue giltotherescue

      1) We believe showing a relative date is a good default. If you’d like to see the full date, simply hover your mouse over the “18 hours ago” text.

      2) Now you should be able to go as far back into your points history as you’d like.

Thank you for bringing back our complete history, as well as adding the filters to help us get the info. we need and want!  Your hard work is much appreciated.

To be more organized the divisions need to come back. The blessings, sales and etc.  choices just under the title. Especially sales. I do not like to going through the whole stream to get whose choice activities the first thing in the morning.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Greekgeek Greekgeek

The organized tabs letting us zero in on sales, blessings, etc was added by Fluffanutta’s Workshop Add-On from SquidUtils. It wasn’t put there by Squidoo.

      • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/giltotherescue giltotherescue

It’s a great feature. We’ve just added it based on your feedback.

        • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/kevinw1 kevinw1

I see the Sales tab (great!) but not blessings, likes etc separately. I’m not worried about the likes but being able to see blessings is very useful as they are rare and hard to pull out of the main stream.

Wow!!!! That was a fast turnaround. Thanks for the filter. It makes it soooo much easier to get through the stream of info. It’s great!!!!

I liked the highlighted or bordered numbers along the left. Non-highlight makes me feel like I am falling off the edge.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/giltotherescue giltotherescue

Today we released quite a few improvements based on your feedback. Thank you for helping us improve the Activity page. Among today’s updates:

    1) Added more points history to the feed (now, except for the “Sales” view, you can go as far back as you like)

    2) Filters for Points, HQ News, Quests, and Sales. These URLs can be bookmarked, making it easy to return to your favorite view.

    3) Fixed a bug that caused some items to be ordered incorrectly

We have a few more improvements in the works, including private RSS feeds and a fix for the bug where links cannot be opened in a new window.

This is one step forward to a more useful activity stream. In the future, we’re also considering features like “rolling up” related events (such as “giltotherescue liked your lenses X, Y, and Z”) to make the stream easier to read. Inline comment approval/reply is also under consideration.

It’s MUCH better. The filters are a little slower to load than Fluff’s version, because they’re actually loading new pages, not just hiding stuff, but I’ll get used to it ^_^

One thing he had that was great was a number of how many of each were showing. THAT was good for summing up sales, mostly.More filters would be awesome. Subfilters for everything in each of the main filters perhaps? Or numbers of each, so we could spot what we’ve missed on that page, or not have to count ourselves.

Hey, Gil….I always appreciate when there’s a huge technical f#ck-up and you used to update us on SquidU or sometimes through Twitter. Hope you use the activity stream through Squidoo HQ updates to keep us in the loop when stuff is uber-buggy.

Thank you for getting our full history back – and for the filterd tabs, whyich are just perfect!

So do you mean the browsing of your squidoo history is now returned? Not just limited to the last 24hours? If I am right, then I’m 100% like this new feature of Squidoo. Keep it up guys! :)

Please add a filter for blessings and I will be happy with the new activity stream.

Thanks-a-million for putting back the history.  I love the filters.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/KathyMcGraw KathyMcGraw

Good to see the sales tab…and the other filters.  Why can’t quests be where they were before?  Maybe just add a tab to the main bar for HQ…then everything in the activity stream would be what is happening directly to our lenses, or what we have done to another person’s lens.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/marciag marciag

Ok just woke up with a redesign of the Activity tab – looks great, one of my favorites is showing the sales, and that’s back. What I’m missing now is the blessings – I guess I could go one by one through the points until I find them, but can we get a button for them as well? I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who’s missing them. Otherwise the layout looks now nice and clean.

Oooooh, I like it now!  Yesterday I did not like it at all because I couldn’t see the stuff I was interested in seeing and I don’t know if I hadn’t noticed the tabs or if you tweaked it and added them but now seeing the tabs so I can pick which info to view I love it!

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/YayasHome YayasHome

Oh, thank you!  Thank you!  Thank you so very much.  I was lost without my Activity page.  I so appreciate it that you gave it back ta’ me.  When I saw it was back again, I jus’
hugged it an’ hugged it.  Please don’t ever take it away again.  You can take my blankie (although, I may fight you), if you must.  But please leave me my Activity page.

I really like the way you added buttons so’s we could separate the HQ News an’ the activity, too.  I like it that the HQ News is there to remind us, but I really like it that they can be looked at separately.

I also like Stacy Lou Hardin’s idea for having pages, instead of scrolling.  That would really overcome a lotta’ pro’lems that pop up with scrolling.

Also, I love the idea of being able to go to a lens an’ return a comment, visit, Angel Blessing, whatever… all from the same general area.  I surely hope you will be able to do that for us, Gil.  That would help soooooo much more than I can even express.

One more thing; someone mentioned that it would sure be nice if there were some way to look at HQ Visits, Hi-Level Squid visits, Angel Blessings, Comments an’ Squid Likes as separate groupings… kinda’ like you did with the buttons for Quests, Points, HQ News an’ sales.

If you go to JoAnne Smith’s comment an’ study on it, you will see some really great ideas.

An’ I so appreciate everything that is being done to let us have access to all the different things, individually.  As someone who struggles with Dyslexia an’ several other learning challenges, I have spent countless hours in trying to make sense of Squidoo.  Many people have done much to help me, but the more I can do for myself, the happier I think everyone will be.

That said, separate tabs are as vital for many of us with learning challenges as pictures are.  It takes a combination of methods an’ media to fully grasp a concept an’ those lessons need to be reinforced over an’ over an’ over again.  Anything you can do to make that type of reinforcement more readily available would help sooooo much.

I realize that it might seem like I am asking for you to make things easier for me, alone, because I have learning disabilities.  But the fact is, we have a whole generation of talented ADHD sufferers jus’ around the corner, ready to take their place in society.  Will we be denying them a chance to learn by not providing accessible tools, in the same way that the little autistic girl, Carly, was unable to communicate until she sat down to a computer an’ took matters into her own hands?  Yes, she had been well-cared for an’ yes, she was loved without reserve.  But she came ALIVE once she figured out that she could begin to communicate.

Please keep in mind that the easier it is for the majority of people to un’erstan’ an’ interact with Squidoo, regardless of education or ability, the more successful Squidoo will be for itself, as well as for Lens Masters, overall.  An’ with that, of course, there will be a continuous cylcle of more success for everyone.

:: Yaya steps down from her soapbox an’ offers it to the next person in line::

    Thank you for listening.
An’ ’til the next time, keep a hug on.
     ~ Yaya

An’ would you b’lieve that I even forgot to mention somethin’?  I actually miss the Trophies.  D’ya’ think we could have ‘em peek out, once in awhile?  Maybe?  Pleeeeze?

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/giltotherescue giltotherescue

You can still find your Recent Trophies in the right sidebar on the Activity page.

Having everything on the activity page is extremely helpful.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Becksta Becksta

Is it just me or has the “edit” button gone when you look at your own lenses in the published format? I see the “Create lens” button but no edit option. I could do without the create lens option since it’s easy enough to get it in the navigation bar, but I’d really like the edit option back please since it’ll make life a whole lot easier for those of us who have lots of lenses or seasonals that they are trying to update.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/mamabush mamabush

I really love getting the HQNews and the SquidQuests right no my Activity feed…I hope you decided to keep it that way!  ;)

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/YayasHome YayasHome

    Hello,
Will you be putting the Edit button back on the right-hand side so’s we can use it again?  I’d surely appreciate it.  Thank you.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/YayasHome YayasHome

I was thinking that if you are able to, if/when you add a button to separate the different special visits (like ‘HQ Visits’, ‘Squid Angel Blessings’… that sorta’ thing… ) d’ya’ think you could also number ‘em?  Like, under the ‘Squid Angel Blessings,’ could you place a number next to each so’s we could keep track of how many we have?
‘Course, my mind can stretch even further an’ ask if you’re able to number ‘em according to how many per lens, but I suspect that That would be a much bigger project.  Maybe you could tinker with the idea in your Spare Time (said entirely with tongue in cheek) whilst you’re twiddling your thumbs an’ dunno’ what to do with yourself, eh?

Whatever you are able to do that would make it easier is greatly appreciated.  I do know that none of this is simply a matter of pushing a few buttons an’ we are all sooooo grateful for the time you are putting in to make things much easier for all of us.

I can’t quite figure out how to include the marshmallows (on accounta’ I burned ‘em an’ all), but I’m sending you summa’ my special homemade hot cocoa an’ my own home baked cookies.  The thing is, I burned the marshmallows when I got busy whilst I was building a lens an’ my virtual oven fergot ta’ turn off.  However, the hot cocoa an’ cookies came out juuuuust right.  Naturally, I was using my virtual stove an’ my virtual oven when I made these, so I surely hope you are able to have yourself a virtual party with ‘em.  Jus’ my way of sayin’ thanks, Gil.  Your efforts deserve somethin’ special. :)

Fantastic Changes. I love the new activity stream and filters. Love the Sales filter! Love the HQ News Filter. I subscribed to the HQ newsletter on email to get updated  but its even better on the dashboard! Another improvement I would really like is a way to manage my visitors. I like to pay my visitors a return visit to their lenses. However, sometimes I don’t get to do it till after a few days later due to other commitments. By then, I find it hard to sieve through the visitors to see which I’ve visited and which ones I’ve missed. I don’t know how that can be done though but if it can, it would be a tremendous help.

Haha, what a helpful article.  I was just sharpening my knives to complain about the activity page being the main one and all the extra clicking when updating when hey presto!  -  I was told how to easily fix the problem myself.  Thank you.
