Be A Rebel

A friend shared an article on Facebook yesterday from Take Part called: Fighting the Good (Food) Fight: New Show Celebrates America’s Food Rebels. It showcases some renegade food shows that are making people stand up and take notice.

Shows like Bizarre Foods are certain to gain an audience with dishes like jellyfish soup and pickled bull’s heart. Um…yuck, I’m not that adventurous (although I do enjoy watching the show).

But the program that caught my eye (and is the focus of the article) is a show called Food Forward. Food Forward shows how regular people are standing up and creating a movement for eating better in America by reforming school lunch programs and starting urban gardens. These are real people with a passion for something they believe in. They are rebels, going again mainstream American and not only talking about how people can eat better, but doing something about it.

After reading the article about Food Forward I was fired up. Inspired. motivated. I want to be a food rebel!

What sort of lens can you craft that has that effect on people?

I think I have finally found a niche that I am passionate about and I hope will have a positive effect is on fitness and pushing ourselves away from the computer and tv and doing something that will pay dividends in our long-term health.  What you do today will tell on you down the road.

I couldn’t have said it better myself. :) Way to go! I enjoy looking into some of those lenses in the near future.

I can only wish I would be able to grow a garden in Arctic Canada. I enjoy flowers and the idea of growing some of my own vegetables but, for now, it remains a dream.

I recently talked to a guy who lives in downtown Milwaukee and grows veggies in his basement using grow lights. Not impossible!

I have two out there now, one on Mark Bittman, the Times outspoken critic of the food industry, and another on “The China Study,” which unsparingly reports on the effects of food on health.

That said, I’ve been reluctant to write more because, although I put in the same effort and commitment, neither of these lenses get nearly the notice of most of my others, even those that swim in a lot of competition. I was fired up too, but discouraged by the lack of interest in the subject, pro or con.

I don’t usually comment negatively, but if anyone has had better results, I’m ready to learn.

I’ve experienced the same thing Dave.  Unfortunately our passion for certain subjects doesn’t always translate to the readers.

Are you writing for you, or do you have a specific audience in mind? Both motivations are fantastic, but a page is less likely to become popular unless a very specific audience is addressed.

Agreeing with Gil.  If your target audience is people who already share your passion, you will probably have a sense of what they are searching for and what you can share that will be unique and useful to them as they pursue that passion.  If your target audience is the masses who don’t know about your topic yet, it will be much harder to get their attention.

I’ve written a number of articles about various animal issues such as puppy mills, factory farming, and so on but they dropped so low in rank they went to WIP and I removed them.  Squidoo is for shopping lists not passion.

Hi Summer, I’m sorry that you feel that way. Squidoo has many, many passionate lenses in the top ranks and we have always been champions for quality content.

Two great lenses that have nothing to do with shopping:

I just recently moved and have had to make some pretty huge changes in my lifestyle. Like serious hardcore recycling efforts, and practicing a leave no trace lifestyle. I wrote a lens about it, and am about to put out a few more detailed ones to go with it. I am pretty sure it can change other people’s lives just like it is changing mine.

Can’t wait to see the lens!

I created a Duel lens ages ago: http://www.squidoo.com/php-vs-rails I really should update it more often, but it consistently receives both SEO and social traffic. I picked a wedge issue, provided a bit of context, and gave people a place to express their opinions. There’s nothing that incites passion like a duel!

I would think that a lens which looks at the reality of unhealthy eating habits would inspire people. When I say the reality, I mean the actual reality, not a sugar-coated one (which seems many people do instinctively), but I can foresee that people would call it too “shocking” because it’s rare to having something thrown in your face without restraint.
