Remembering Mawie

Mawie-Me property of Susan52 all rights reservedExcuse me while I get personal. My grandmother (“Mawie”) was laid to rest today. She died last week at the age of 102 years and 9 months. I’m her oldest grandchild and her name is my middle name, so she always has been and always will be a very big part of my life and who I am.

I haven’t made a  lens about my Mawie, but a lot of other lensmasters have made lenses about their grandmothers and I’m proud to feature a few of them below. Some are in honor of elderly mothers, most are about grandmas, and each one is very special. After you’ve enjoyed these lenses, feel free to post your lens about your grandmother in a comment below. I’d love to read it!

8. Happy 100th, Grannie!

This page is dedicated to Callie Perna Penland Stewart, my grandmother and sole living grandparent, who turned 100 in October 2009. Thankfully I was able to attend her birthday party with my children and get to see all my family – and it’s a big family! He…

I’m so sorry for your loss Susan :( Yes, grandmothers hold a special places in people’s hearts and I had my favorite grandma too. I was sorry she had to go before she turned 80 so the age of your dear grandma sounds like a long and rich life to me. Let’s go on keeping our grandmas in those special corners of our hearts forever.

This is a wonderful tribute to a very special woman and I’m sure she would have been touched by it, honoring her as it does while maintaining her (and your) privacy. Thank you very much for sharing.

What a great tribute to Mawie. 102 years of age is very impressive. Living through two world wars, the mass production of the automobile, and technology… The stories she must have been able to tell…

I’m sorry to hear about your grandmother, Susan! My grandmother died when I was a teenager, she was on dialysis at the end. She was my mom’s mom and it was heartbreaking. Her & my mom talked on the phone during her last days & they finally put their differences to bed – any & all negative, petty events of the past were laid to rest & filled with peace & love!

I wish I could have hung out with her more. She was only 60! There’s so much about her & our family’s history I would’ve asked. All my grandparent’s are deceased.

I hope your grandmother had a great, full life & was able to accomplish everything she set forth.

      Sincerely,

      Marc

      • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/MarcStorm MarcStorm

Correction: I thought my grandmother was either 60 or 62 but I was wrong, she was 68, born in 1932 Wow! She was 12 years old when the world was in chaos(WW2 was in full swing), sheesh!

So sad to hear your granni passed away, but as my mom always says: we don’t have eternal life. Your granny reached the age of almost 103 years old, that’s an accomplishment a lot of us won’t fulfill. Do write about her, it will make you remember more lovely things about her then you might expect.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/StephenJParkin StephenJParkin

My grandmothers were both special people one died at 99 (my Dad,s Mum) and if you get to 100 in Britain the Queen sends a congratulatory telegram, we all thought she would do it. My Mothers Mum was 87 when she left us. It is such a sad feeling because we always feel like they will be there forever, but it just is not so.

It is nice she had such a long and I hope happy life.

i don’t know you Susan52 but just wanted to offer my condolences to you and your family. I know how special Grandmothers are. My Nanna lived with my family til her passing when I was 10. Grandparents play a very important role in their grandchildren’s lives. Think they’re similar to a parent but mostly a very special friend or at least it seemed that way with mine. Please try to just remember all the special memories you have of her when thinking of her.

Some women were born to be mothers and grandmothers. It is such a delight when a child’s life is enhanced by the love of the women who care for them. I am going to steep a pot of tea in honour of my lovely Mom (who is my daughter’s grammy) and my Grandma and Granny, who were really loving women.

Susan, I wish upon you many years of “channelling” Mawie for all of the children that come into your life. You carry her legacy and that legacy is now yours to pass on. Enjoy the ride – it’s a wonderful way to honour her life.

Some splendid grandmothers and splendid innings there! Now another good way to preserve their memories is to create a page for each on familypedia.wikia.com, where you can link them easily to other relatives and display ancestry trees and descendant tables. Three or four of my lenses mention Familypedia, which is where I do most of my internet work that’s not games or about games.

Thank you, too, for including these lenses, some of which I have already read. Others I hope to read when my wee grandbaby takes a nap today, unless of course, she is napping on me, which happens rather frequently!

I am sorry about your Mawie Susan. I had lead a blessed life without having known the loss of anyone up until 4th of May 2012 when I lost my Grandma. I saw her only three weeks prior Happy and healthy as ever at my sisters wedding and due to working away (even though I got a flight home) I didn’t make it back in time to say bye. I don’t have a lens about her but thanks for the idea, there might be one coming out soon. Again my condolences.
