New Lensmasters Carving Niches Into Squidoo Lenses

susan52 by on Wed, Feb 1st, 2012

Lots of people come to Squidoo to write about a specific topic. We call specific topics “niches,” and providing space for you to carve your own niche is a big part of what Squidoo is all about.

Although he plans to write about “lots of different stuff” on Squidoo, Workout Guru is pretty specific on one of his first lenses. He doesn’t just write about tattoos, or about arm tattoos. He narrows his topic even more by writing about Arm Tattoos For Girls.

alex89 is an avid gamer and has made a lens about one of her favorites, Dungeons and Dragons. Specifically, she talks about the social aspects in D&D, Oldschool or Epic? and how that makes it so much better than just turning on the computer to play a game.

Jercow75 is a part-time father to six children and plans to write more on single parenting and blended families. He has a great start on his niche topic with The Sometimes Single Dad where he talks about what he’s learned trying to be a full-time father with part-time hours.

MichaelCollinson and his wife moved from the UK to Brittany in France in August 2011. When he joined Squidoo, a great niche topic was born. He writes about both entertainment in France and practical topics within the niche, including Driving in France, a very specific and useful lens for those who plan a visit.

SmartyGirlRenee has many interests, among them supporting women in business. How to Think Like a Business Woman is just one of her lenses that provides great advice to that niche group of readers.

Interior designer relish_interiors is carving out a colorful niche on Squidoo. She says that she likes to “help people make the most of their space.” One way she does that is with colors and moods, which she teaches all about in The Color Affect. What does color do to your mood?

Of course it’s fine to write about more than one niche on Squidoo, but making each lens very specific is a very good thing. So, what’s your niche?

Susan52 didn't know she wanted to be a Giant Squid when she grew up, but here she is and she couldn't be happier about it! When she isn't doing one thing or another here at Squidoo, you'll probably find her spending time with her family or otherwise enjoying life one glorious day at a time.

interesting post…i guess my main niches are “action figures” and “anything elvis” !

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/tonyb65 tonyb65

Interesting, I suppose at present my two main niches are either music or food related. I think I will move into other areas in due course however.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/sherridan sherridan

As an work psychologist I am certainly the career person, but I dabble in personal development and relationships….

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Susan52 Susan52

      All popular topics!

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/BuddyBink BuddyBink

I do not think I have discovered my real niche yet. With what I am learning here I do not think it will be too long before I do find it.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Serenia Serenia

I guess I have several niches. Maps would be one of them, star trek would be another. I have a lot of interests and havent really narrowed any of them down as yet.

I find it hard to go really deep in some niches, but I will keep working on it.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Susan52 Susan52

One way to narrow down a topic, Serenia, is to see what search terms people use to find your lenses.  Then consider making a separate lens if there’s one particular aspect of the topic that people seem to respond to.  It’s a process!

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/OzGirl OzGirl

I think my niche here will most likely be topics on our rural life here on the Kansas plains, trying to be more green and eco-conscious, and the occasional “off-topic” lens.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Susan52 Susan52

Nothing wrong about going “off topic,” Ozgirl!  In fact,it’s fun to write something out of the normal niche which, if you’re not careful, could become a bit of a rut.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/orlandovisitorcoupons orlandovisitorcoupons

Nice post! My niche is Orlando and anything to do with it. Check it out

I began on Squidoo writing about what I liked, then learned more about ‘niches’ and began to concentrate on my two favorite areas — crochet (actually, all the fiber arts, specifically handmade) and baseball.  I began with a ‘general’ niche, then learned to ‘narrow the niche’. :)  It’s a fun learning experience.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/teriann teriann

Very thought provoking to stay on subject creating a ‘niche’ topic and stop floundering around.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/earthybirthymama earthybirthymama

I’m not sure what my niche is yet… so many things I love to to do and would love to write about.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/manlalakbay manlalakbay

I don’t have a niche right now because I’m still enjoying writing the things interest me. Anyway, I hope I could find my niche someday. :)

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/AlishaV AlishaV

I like to dabble in all sorts of different areas, but I have a few different niches that I tend to focus on a bit more, chickens, places I love, kink, and pets, especially making stuff for pets.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Mujjen Mujjen

My main niche is Ethiopia. But since kids and cooking are among my interests,  I make a lot of lenses about that, too. International cooking, especially.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/GreatBooksToRead GreatBooksToRead

Good ideas – narrowing down your ideas is a good idea.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/psiloveyou psiloveyou

My main niche is paper crafting….making cards, scrapbook pages, and using the Cricut!

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/getmoreinfo getmoreinfo

As a new lensmaster I started out writing about scrapbooking then I tried topics about celebrity hair color, now I am interested in solar powered appliances. I wish I could settle on one niche but its hard to choose just one.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/seelya83 seelya83

Wow.  Thanks for the mention! Truly appreciated.  I love talking about my kids and my daughter Tiana and I are having a ball with our cooking site.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/bechand bechand

My niches would be Willy Wonka – and Birthday Parties – I also have a few recipe pages too :O)

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/zolemia zolemia

My niche is the kitchen, but within the kitchen my smaller focuses are many such as food, recipes, appliances, cookware, then onto nutrition and wellness. They all fit into the kitchen in my mind. I have so much to share and can not wait to get it out.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/relish_interiors relish_interiors

Wanted to say thank you for featuring me! Most of my lenses are about interior design, but I am also an amateur cook, and love creating mew recipes. I also share some tips in the kitchen, and will be sharing some of my favorite recipes. Thanks for stopping by!

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/imarketpros imarketpros

my niches are in legal and society… Though maybe I’ll pursue music and entertainment in the future ;) least that is the most fun to say the least.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/LooLooBird LooLooBird

This is good advice, and makes sense of course. The more specific you are, the easier it is to be found!

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/gonzalezdenise gonzalezdenise

    Great ideas.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Milanho Milanho

    Nice lens.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/anka_n anka_n

I started on Squidoo writing about self improvement, then I wrote about kids fitness and now about business. Finally, I think I will continue to narrow down the niche of starting an online business. This topic is much closer to my background…

I just became a lensmaster here on Squidoo on Jan.2nd. to kick off the New Year, yippee! I have built a few lenses featuring product reviews but my favorite niche is in the Healthy Living category. I feel this is the most beneficial method of pointing out topics for better living so others can follow.

I love the inspirations from lenses such as this one, since I am new here, reading through these ideas and suggestions are very helpful as I continue onward to my set of wings!

I started on Squidoo with the idea of created a Niche on a particular subject in Spirituality.Later I got busy on another website and completely forgot about my initial intention. After reading this article, I am now eager to start again. Thanks for sharing this.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/PoetFlow PoetFlow

Hmmm, I think my niche would be publishing and writing. I created my lens because I was looking at new avenues to promote my books/ writing, my company and the writers who publish through my company. Soon I was writing about my favorite books and posting polls and duels about the publishing industry and the literature world in general. I’m in the process of creating a new lens dedicated to the reviews I write for authors’ and poets’ books I read. I think it’s safe to assume that I won’t really deviate from my niche.

Susan, I’ve managed to accumulate two niches during my time at Squidoo…landscaping and Poland.  Probably I have a dual personality.  Thanks for this commentary about new lensmasters and niches.  Your introductory photo hit the right note…he is “carving” a pumpkin, isn’t he?

I would say that my writing skills have improved significantly. I have been working on writing better introductions as I feel that’s the point the reader decides whether the article is worth reading.

Loved your lens and I’m new here so i thought i’d post a question hoping that you or someone else can answer it. I can’t figure out how to edit my profile? I’d like to add a photo and a short bio??  Any guidance would be gratefully received and also if you can tell me where i should’ve asked this question. Thanks again for introducing us to all the new writers who have caught your eye and sorry if this is a strange place to ask this question.
