Deborah-Diane Is Sharing Her Holiday Traditions

What is your favorite holiday tradition?
Even though we are now empty-nesters, I still love to decorate our home for the holidays. We put up a tree, set decorations around the house, hang a wreath on the door and place solar powered candy canes along the front of the house. They use miniature solar panels so they don’t use electricity, and they stay lit for a few hours after dark.

This year, we put up our tree the day before Thanksgiving. Then, on Thanksgiving Day, two of our grandkids decorated it while we were fixing the dinner. I’ve attached a photo of the tree after they were finished.

What’s your favorite holiday food?
We like to have a big breakfast on Christmas day, with eggs, sausage, grits and chocolate chip pancakes! Later in the day, we set out trays of fruit, veggies and smoked turkey so we can relax and snack when we feel like it. We also enjoy key lime pie for dessert!

What do you love most about the season?
For me, the holidays mean family. We have four adult daughters, and all of them have families of their own. Although we don’t always manage it, we try to see all four of their families sometime during the months of December and January. Christmas can be spread out over several weeks in our family!

What is your favorite childhood holiday memory?
My father was one of eight children, and most of his brothers and sisters were married, with kids, so I had a lot of cousins. On Christmas Eve we would all get together at my grandmother’s house. The kids would play, while the grown-ups would sit in the kitchen and visit. It was the only time of year that I saw all my cousins at the same time, so it was a lot of fun. At the end of the evening, we opened gifts.

Are you dreaming of a white Christmas?
We live in Southern California, so it is unlikely we will have a white Christmas. In fact, there have been a few times when we have had to run our air conditioner! However, when our kids were growing up, we used to take them skiing at Christmas … so we have enjoyed a white Christmas two or three times in the past. Your question brought back some nice memories!

I have the same ornament on top of my tree. It’s -30 here and we are definitely having a white and cold Christmas.

Like you, I grew-up in a big family with lots of cousins and it was fun to see them all at Christmas time. What a beautiful tree, Deb! I love the angel topper and Nativity display. Have a merry Christmas and happy New Year!

Beautiful picture, gorgeous tree! I like your food tradition for Christmas day – sounds like that would keep the cooks from being stuck in the kitchen all day which definitely sounds good to me. Thanks for sharing, and Merry Christmas!

I have the same Christmas Eve memory, except it was my family. I am the last of eight, and I have wonderful memories of Christmas centered around just being together as a family. You have lovely traditions! :-)
