Community Lensmaking Challenge: Cooking Hacks 101

6417267631_c8711f719d_zHave you found an easier way to do anything in the kitchen?

Why not help other home cooks by sharing your best cooking hack or hacks on a new lens?  Although I’m not personally very fond of the term, you may have noticed as I did, articles featuring life hacks are popping up all over social media lately.

To complete this quest, we’re looking for your best tips and advice (hacks) for making meal prep and /or kitchen time easier, faster, cheaper or better tasting.

You can use our How To format (to use it start your lens HERE) or create a traditional lens by starting it using the tab found on your dashboard.  You don’t have to use the word hack if you don’t want to.

Lens Ideas might include:

  • The easiest way to peel a hard-boiled egg.
  • 5 Food Prep Hacks You’ll Love.
  • Cut your kitchen time in half by simply using a _______ instead.
  • Fresh Vegetable Prep 101.
  • Choosing the best beef.
  • 3 Easy Ways to Shuck Corn – Take your pick.
  • Why it’s easier to cook _____ from scratch.
  • Or any other helpful kitchen or cooking tip you’ve got.

In addition to the hack, please share a personal story about how you came to learn your kitchen trick and include properly cited photos as well as any products or ingredients needed to use it.  If you include any Amazon modules, remember to share a few words in each of the description areas.

When your lens is completed, share the link here in the comments section so the entire Squid community can take a look.  I’m pretty sure that everyone is looking for easier ways to prepare their meals.  I know I am.

At the end of the quest, one week from today, we’ll grab a handful of lenses to show off in a special post right here at SquidooHQ.

Love, love, love this topic! Can’t wait to read and learn from all the hacks/tips!

  • bdkz

Can’t wait to see these lenses!

  • StrongMay

There are some things that really made a difference in my kitchen (such as the Master Slicer or hand-held colander), but I already wrote product review lenses about them, so I have nothing else left to participate in this quest with (Bummer!).

    • rms

Instead of a product review about the product, can you write a new lens that shares some of your cooking tips from a different angle?

      • StrongMay

I can’t think of any. I shared all the different angles I could think of on the product lenses. Never mind, I look forward to other Squids’ lenses inspired by the quest!

These cooking hacks are all over the web. Got some catching up to do, Squidoo.

  • lizgrossman93

Here is my lens on hard boiled eggs. I hope you enjoy it!

    • CalobrenaOmai

I was just talking about this in my comment.

      • lizgrossman93

        Oh, Haha. Thank you!

  • partybuzz

Since I was boiling eggs when I read this, I went with your idea of the easiest way to peel hard boiled eggs! You will notice that one egg is missing in the photo after they were peeled, this is because my hubby ate it! Thanks for the idea!

  • CalobrenaOmai

The only hack I know or discovered came from an educational show that was more of a comedy. How to boil an egg successfully.

Hello, here is my hack on how to choose the best beef

  • Kathryn Grace

This is one of those super simple tricks I didn’t figure out until I’d been cooking a decade or two, but then I didn’t bake a lot when I was young. Perhaps it will inspire a novice to bake more: Quick Way to Soften Butter at Btw, thanks for promoting it to Best of Food!

  • Marke-ting

    What a great idea!

  • clive-hooper-180

The thing I have learnt about cooking is don’t be afaid to experiment on yourself. Adding a dash of this and a drop of that can make all the difference

  • cwunderlich

Added my addition. Hope you enjoy it.

  • britflorida

Simple. Easy. Takes two minutes. Saves money. Saves doing more dishes. Free…

  • Joele

Cut your kitchen time in half by simply using a recipe from Jamie Oliver instead.

  • jackie1963

I don’t know if this is already being done but when I make a potato salad,I peel and chop the potato into cubes before I boil them.I find its a lot easier and quicker than the way my mom used to do it.She would boil them first and then try to chop up hot potato, which wasn’t the easiest way to do this, and never burn your fingers again.

This fit along with something I was doing and motivated me to do a little more:

  • partybuzz

I made this lens for the original quest, but just added a product that you all might be interested in, and very cool kitchen hack! It was suggested by another lensmaster.

  • Scindhia

I missed the quest.. But here is what I tried!

  • aswahayah

Bit late but this lens covers tips for microwave cooking, it isn’t a new one but a very helpful one for beginners. Microwave cooking can save time, money and leave your kitchen cool in the hot weather.
